The Organisation
Penrith City Council is a large and growing local council based in Western Sydney, at the foothills of the Blue Mountains.
It is one of the larger metropolitan Councils in Sydney, spanning an area of 404km2, with a population of around 194,000 residents.
Substantial growth is expected across the Penrith area, following the upcoming Western Sydney Airport, greater access to key transportation links and increased investment into the area.

The Role
The Media and Communications Advisor provides timely, expert, day-to-day support and advice to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Mayoral delegate on Council's projects, programs and matters.
This position works alongside a Public Affairs Officer and reports into the Public Affairs Manager.
This small team sits within the Future Directions & Resilience directorate and manages public interest issues and reputation.
This role ensures the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, or Mayoral delegate is informed, concisely briefed, and prepared ahead of time to deliver key messages to all stakeholders, whilst also responding to relevant media matters, and preparing materials.

Key Responsibilities Provide strategic and considered communications support and advice relating to Council's projects, programs, and the media.Prepare high-quality, factual messages, briefing documents, reports, communications collateral, and media material.Assist with the development of speeches, responding to relevant Mayoral media matters, receiving and providing feedback to stakeholders across Council, research and prepare Mayoral Minutes.Attend meetings and events to support the Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Mayoral delegate at civic, business, community or other engagements.
This includes attending on the day, pre-event preparation and coordination, photography, social media and post-event follow-up.Coordinate and draft responses to Mayor, Deputy Mayor, or Mayoral delegate media enquiries with relevant stakeholders, seeking internal approval, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
Coordinate any briefing notes or interview arrangements for TV, radio etc., well ahead of time.Prepare high-quality media releases and communications collateral speeches (in conjunction with other Communications Officers).Obtain input, monitor, and report on media interests and issues, then provide recommendations to manage any identified risks.Provide strategic and operational communications advice on internal and external communications issues to enable consistent messaging.Foster positive working relationships with stakeholders including journalists and media outlets, and internal stakeholders, to assist in the development and delivery of communications activities.Assist in developing website content, general information, digital content, photography, promotional collateral and resources. It is expected that you will have tertiary qualifications in Communications, Journalism, Political Science or similar discipline, and demonstrated experience of:
supporting an executive, elected member or minister with the preparation of concise communications briefing materials and providing considered communication and media support.preparing media releases, media responses and managing media issues.managing competing priorities including the ability to negotiate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure deadlines are met.
