About the Role We now have an opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team in the development of innovative equipment that enables world class scientific research to take place at Diamond, for a fixed term contract until 31st March 2026.
The Engineering team plays a key role in the design, development and construction of the Accelerators and Beamlines that generate and transport light to the scientific samples.
The role is responsible for:
Using CAE design tools such as PTC Creo, ANSYS & MatLab to produce engineering information, such as 3D models, assembly drawings and detailed manufacturing drawings. Preparing manufacturing drawings using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing according to BS8888 and other relevant BS standards. Applying knowledge of structural, precision engineering and thermal design where required to design reliable products. Using hand calculations and finite element analysis, to verify engineering designs. Working closely with internal and external scientific and engineering staff to produce mechanical designs for projects. Preparation of technical information in support of procurement activities. Contributing to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises. Maintaining and updating engineering drawings and documentations on projects. About You You should demonstrate significant experience in mechanical engineering design, including experience of:
3D CAD Engineering drawings, GD&T, model-based definition Materials Selection Manufacturing techniques. You should also demonstrate knowledge / experience from at least 2 of the following areas:
Structural & Thermal analysis (analytical and FEA) Complex mechanisms and structures with nanometre accuracy Precision Motion Systems Ultra-High Vacuum systems Large, fabricated structures Machinery Directive Optical Systems Vibration & Stability Metrology You should be qualified to degree level in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics or demonstrate equivalent working experience.
You will display excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with scientists, fellow engineers, and stakeholders.
