Managing Solicitor, Criminal Law PracticeOversee the representation of Aboriginal clients before the criminal justice systemConduct complicated legal matters, including committals and district court workManagement and supervision of staff and resources within the teamPrimary Purpose of the RoleThe primary objective of the position is to deliver culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to clients in accordance with the ALS policies, procedures, and guidelines in Criminal Law Practice including early intervention and outreach services, community legal education, and referrals.
The position holder will work autonomously, seeking the advice and support of the supervising Deputy Principal Solicitor, or their delegate as required, and consulting with senior colleagues before determining applications for merit in complex matters.
About the RoleThe Managing Solicitor is part of the Criminal Law Practice based in Kempsey, NSW.
The Managing Solicitor will be responsible for:
Support the Deputy Principal Solicitor with the delivery of legal services within the relevant staffing location.Management and supervision of staff and resources within the team.Allocation of work and management of workloads including the briefing and assignment of work to external legal representatives and the implementation of policies and procedures for those functions.Oversee the representation of Aboriginal clients before the criminal justice system in the Local, Children's, District and Supreme Courts, and other courts or tribunals.Travelling to regional and interstate locations for work purposes. An inherent requirement of the job is the ability to independently travel to regional locations by car for work purposes, therefore a current driver's licence is required (the ALS is an Equal Opportunity Employer and will consider reasonable adjustments where an employee cannot meet this requirement due to a disability or their age).About YouWe're looking for someone who brings:
Possession of a current Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of NSW with up to 4 years of demonstrated experience in the application of criminal and representation law.Proven ability to manage the day-to-day activities of legal service offices within various locations including the supervision of staff, the allocation of work, and management of workloads and regular reviews of performance.Demonstrated knowledge and experience in legal representation for Aboriginal clients in criminal matters and capacity to brief and instruct Counsel.Valid NSW driver's license.Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal people combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices in dealing with clients, their families, communities, and staff.Pre-Employment RequirementsALS is committed to implementing safe recruitment practices.
