This post will provide strategic and operational leadership, delivering expertise on logistics and transport-related business strategies, developing operating procedures, whilst responding dynamically and pragmatically to business need and growth.

Key accountabilities
Operational Leadership: Lead the daily operations of RAL logistics, shipping and transport functions, providing effective oversight to ensure that services are delivered to a high standard, maintaining compliance and efficiency.

Service Delivery: Provide seamless logistics, shipping and transport services to scientific departments and the broader customer base.

Resource Management: Proactively manage resources to optimise performance.

Innovation Leadership: Drive innovation to enhance processes, workforce skills, and operational procedures.

System Improvement: Implement and run systems to ensure service quality and efficiency within the business.

Maintain a positive profile: Within and outside of the organisation, collaborate closely with customers, universities, suppliers, and industry professionals.

Health and Safety
Ensure that all activities are compliant with STFC SHE Codes and industry standards.
Ensure operations related to personnel, building, plant, and equipment comply with relevant standards and codes.
Maintain, review and update all risk assessments.
Role Responsibilities
Proactively address and respond to organisational priorities and develop services accordingly.
Provide oversight and operational direction for all logistics and transport functions and activity at RAL: Logistics activity of goods inwards and movement on site, management of dewars and liquid nitrogen fulfilment for customers on siteShipping team – a national function that provides shipping expertise and discharges complex shipping activity Storage – care and custody Transport team – in-house driver team and taxi contract and fleet Business and administration Provide detailed insight and offer support to all key stakeholders and departments to ensure optimum customer satisfaction.
Provide oversight and direction to ensure that Imports, exports and domestic despatches are processed daily, and systems are maintained.
Oversight for receiving, processing and despatching all hazardous materials that arrive at RAL, identifying hazards, storing and logging appropriately, arranging for collection, and ensuring compliance and data integrity to avoid H&S risk and financial penalties.
Ensure that a Standard International Transport Operators License is organised, maintained and up to date on behalf of STFC so that all domestic and international transport activity is compliant.
Develop, maintain and update web content and service level information, including advice and guidance, to STFC customers on all aspects of the service to ensure the customer access is efficient so that service expectations are well managed.
Review, update and continually improve risk assessment procedures and practices and align with industry practice and legislation.
Develop reporting that provides management information across the range of services and informs business case for resource and budget.
Develop and maintain the logistics and transport workforce development and training plans aligning to goals and objectives.
Financial and General Administration
Ensure that data for all recovery related services is recorded and recharged to STFC Users or tenants as per agreed processes and systems.
Provide budgetary management and control and in-year financial activities.
Lead on budget forecast and budget development, adhering to Estates Services budgetary process and practice.
Ensure agency invoices for all import and export consignments are processed, record relevant details and pass to UKSBS.
Actively liaise and work with STFC finance and procurement departments and functions to address and secure changes which support and improve the workflow and practice relating to despatch and destination information.
Undertake procurement activity for goods and services, full lifecycle from sourcing to mobilising, working with category managers within UKSBS and STFC.
Corporate Responsibilities
Provide leadership and expertise to STFC and UKRI in relation to logistics, goods and transportation relating to commercial activities and shipping.
Undertake, lead and support projects as required and as commensurate with the role.
Shortlisting Criteria
Qualifications
Essential
Educated to degree level, with relevant qualifications within the logistics sector (or equivalent professional experience).
Dangerous goods and transportation awareness.
IOSH/NBOSH (or other recognised industry-relevant health and safety accredited training).
Clean current UK driving licence.
Desirable
Cryogenics handling course.
Cylinder gas handling course.
Hold International Operator's License and Transport Manager status.
Membership of Institute of Logistics and Transport or similar.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
Substantial expertise, experience and knowledge in areas of either logistics, transportation or customs compliance, in a customer-focused environment.
Collaborative and robust leadership, ability to take people with you and manage performance.
High level of numeracy and literacy.
Negotiation and diplomacy skills.
Experience in implementing and improving processes and practice.
Confident user of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Access, Word, Outlook) and web-based systems.
Experience in maintaining compliant records management systems.
