About the branch The Litigation and Dispute Resolution (L&DR) Branch is a team of approximately 60 legal practitioners and an additional team of 35 (approx.) legal support staff (including paralegals) that provide specialist legal services to a large number of government clients and departments. The Branch enjoys an extraordinary diversity of exciting and challenging litigation and advisory work, working on matters that are topical and often involve public interest issues. Matters cover areas such as personal injury claims (including those involving institutional abuse), police civil claims, coronial inquests, vexatious litigant applications, tortious claims, defamation, post-sentence supervision and detention orders, judicial review (including those involving prisoners) and matters involving the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act .
About the role We have exciting opportunities for eager and enthusiastic Legal Assistants to join our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Branch. The role will provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to a team of solicitors.
Responsibilities will include:
Preparing, formatting and reviewing legal documentation, including correspondence and court documents Liaising with barristers' clerks and preparing briefs for counsel, inclusive of the collation of e-briefs Filing and service of court documents via online platforms Autonomous file management - conduct of matter related tasks, monthly billing and maintaining efficient and effective electronic files Calendar and mailbox management The successful candidates will have previous legal support (administrative) experience, preferably within a litigation environment. This role will provide you with the opportunity to take ownership and build a long-term career, with great development and progression opportunities. You will also have the opportunity to work on, and contribute to, high profile matters of public interest.
Skills and experience Demonstrated experience in a similar litigation legal assistant role Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite Demonstrable capability in providing high quality assistance to a team of solicitors, in a deadline driven and fast paced environment Strong understanding of legal processes and court jurisdictions, legal terminology and an ability to conduct research using online databases and systems Self-starter who takes initiative with advanced skills in problem solving Excellent attention to detail, with a commitment to service excellence VGSO offers an inclusive, collegiate and collaborative work environment where you will be well-supported and mentored to develop your knowledge.
