The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia is seeking an experienced, strategic professional to lead its expanding international program.
Our ideal candidate will be someone with substantial interests and experience in the international research and higher education sector with a willingness to apply this knowledge to social science research collaboration and exchange. They will have the energy and initiative to develop new and existing partnerships and to create new opportunities for social science researchers in Australia, the Indo-Pacific and more broadly.
The successful candidate will have ample opportunity for International travel – pencil in trips to the Middle East, French Polynesia and India for January, February and November 2025 – and they will represent the Academy and Australian social sciences at a variety of meetings and events. They will also enjoy managing and mentoring a small and energetic team of international program officers currently working in Australia, India and the Philippines.
There are two significant programs currently underway that will be an immediate focus: the 3-year Boosting Social Sciences and their Contribution to Better Lives across the Indo-Pacific program supported by the Canadian International Development Research Centre, and a new 3-year Indo-Pacific Studies Program that has just been contracted to the Academy by DFAT. These programs involve a range of grants, visiting Fellowships, strategic dialogues, regional funders' meetings and policy work that will benefit from the successful candidate's deep professional experience and cultural competence.
As well as being a member of the Academy's leadership team, the successful candidate will also act as Secretary General of the Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (while Australia holds this role), reporting to the AASSREC Executive Council and funding partners.
This is a full-time position based at the Academy's National Office in central Canberra. There is flexibility in hours and working arrangements to accommodate life and family requirements, and a willingness to consider a job-share arrangement for the right candidates. Conditions include:

17% superannuation with access to the UniSuper Defined Benefit Division and option to take all or part of additional super (above the Super Guarantee) as base salary.
