About Us The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP) leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, teaching and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region.
Crawford School of Public Policy is Australia's premier public policy school, with recognized world-class expertise and experience in economics, political science, environmental management and development, and on key Asia-Pacific countries, especially China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as Australia.
The National Security College (NSC), with its academic program integrated with the Crawford School, is a joint initiative of the Commonwealth Government and the Australian National University.
The purpose of the NSC is to lift Australia's national understanding of and capability in security through executive education, academic teaching, research, policy engagement, futures analysis, public outreach and dialogue.
A vital part of this mission is NSC's role as an academic unit providing world-class Master of National Security Policy and PhD programs as well as academic and policy-oriented research.
The Opportunity The National Security College has academic, policy, and executive education functions.
In that context, the College seeks to appoint one teaching and research academic, either a level B (Lecturer) or level C (Senior Lecturer), to teach into the Masters of National Security Policy, and on an ad hoc basis, teach into executive education programs and engage with policy practitioners.
The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will report to the Academic Director in consultation with the Head of College and work as part of a hybrid NSC team including other academics, policy practitioners, ANU professional staff and seconded public servants.
The academic will be a dynamic and dedicated educator and researcher with the willingness to perform in an interdisciplinary team and learn new skills.
They may, where appropriate, have opportunities to participate in policy roundtables and other NSC events.
As a teaching and research academic you will contribute significantly to the coordination and convening of the Master of National Security Policy degree.
You will also be expected to supervise PhD candidates where appropriate.
In addition, you can be expected to teach into the NSC's executive and professional development (EPD) programs and contribute to the policy engagement, Futures Hub, outreach and dialogue aspects of the NSC mission.
NSC academic staff are expected to generate original and quality research publications as well as meet service expectations, in line with the standards of the Crawford School and NSC.
Our Ideal Candidate NSC academics all have subject-matter expertise relating to national security.
At this time, teaching and research expertise in climate, environment and/or energy security would be particularly useful.
However, expertise and experience in at least one of these areas is also valuable: gender and security, counterterrorism, cyber security and critical technologies, geo-economics, critical infrastructure, Indo-Pacific security, intelligence, health and security, migration, social cohesion and security, resilience and preparedness generally.
Our ideal candidate will have a PhD in security studies or a cognate discipline with a strong record of independent research, publications and policy leadership and impact with evidence of an international reputation in that discipline.
They would also have a strong record of scholarship, with publications in high-ranking journals and a demonstrated record of high quality, best practice teaching in areas of expertise.
To excel in either role, you will need to demonstrate exceptional oral and written communication skills, the ability to work effectively both in a team and independently, establish priorities and manage competing deadlines.
