Interim Chief Executive Officer - National Mental Health Commission

The National Mental Health Commission (NMHC) plays a pivotal role in overseeing and providing expert advice on the state of Australia's mental health and suicide prevention systems. This is more important than ever as mental ill-health and suicide are growing issues, requiring robust and effective mental health and suicide prevention systems.The NMHC is undergoing a multi-stage reform process to reset and strengthen the NMHC. This involves an interim step where the NMHC will transition into the Department of Health and Aged Care (the department) as a non-statutory office, and a longer-term redesign of the NMHC's priority functions and governance arrangements.The Government is seeking an outstanding leader, who can unite staff and stakeholders, while delivering on the NMHC's important role in transparency, accountability and monitoring of government investment and its impact on the mental health and suicide prevention systems.As the interim CEO of the NMHC you will set the strategic direction of the NMHC and lead a high-quality team to provide independent oversight to the Minister on the state of the mental health and suicide prevention systems, to promote accountability and influence whole of system reforms. You will need to facilitate high quality engagement which brings staff and stakeholders along on the NMHC's multi-stage reform journey, with paramount consideration for staff wellbeing, and working with the department to implement robust corporate governance and financial systems. You will also work with stakeholders and lead the NMHC's contribution to the redesign of the NMHC's priority functions and governance arrangements into the future.To be a strong contender for this nationally important and challenging role, you will need to demonstrate exceptional ability to drive a strategic agenda and significant leadership expertise in the mental health and/or suicide prevention systems. You will be able to collaborate across all sectors and work in partnership with people with lived experience, their carers, families and communities. You will have experience in organisational management and change and in shaping a positive and safe workplace culture. You will have first-class representational and communication skills, and capacity to maintain strong stakeholder relationships. You will have a sound understanding of Government processes and be able to maintain strong integrity in managing an organisation's governance, financial and corporate matters. You will have a proven ability to motivate and encourage high-performing and passionate staff to develop and deliver high quality deliverables.
