Indigenous Health Officer (Affirmative Measure)

The Indigenous Health Officer is a newly formed role established to address the specific health challenges faced by First Nations people and their communities. As a valued member of Joint Health Command (JHC), you will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to enable better health outcomes for Indigenous members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). You will work together with other members of the team to embed culturally sensitive healthcare within the Defence healthcare system. A critical element is to work on ADF health system's Closing the Gap targets under the National Agreement.Key Responsibilities

Establish and foster collaborative and respectful relationships with First Nations people and health personnel to drive optimal Indigenous health outcomes.Provide advice on Indigenous health issues relevant to health care delivery.Develop, implement and assist in the evaluation of Indigenous health programs including health promotion/education and disease prevention.Advocate for culturally safe health services for Indigenous members by building trust.Work with identified partners to conduct a health needs analysis with reference to the National Agreement on Closing the Gap (Closing the Gap), and/or strategic priorities to identify gaps in the current ADF health system.This vacancy is only available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people as an affirmative measure under s31 of the Australian Public Service Commissioner's Directions 2022. This affirmative measure is within the meaning of 'special measures' under subsection 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.As per the eligibility requirements outlined in this information pack, proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Heritage is required from all applicants.About our Team

You will be working as part of the Clinical Advisory Group (CAG) within Garrison Health branch of Joint Health Command (JHC). The CAG is a multidisciplinary team of senior healthcare professionals who provide subject matter expert advice in their respective clinical fields (e.g. doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dentists) to regional health units and various stakeholders.The CAG works in collaboration with the services (Army, Navy and Air Force), in addition to Australian Public Service and Contracted Health Professionals to meet Defence strategic health priorities and operational requirements.Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will possess the following attributes, skills and experience:Knowledge and understanding of the key issues affecting health outcomes for First Nations people.Strengths-based approach for First Nations people in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) health sector.Connections and networks with First Nations people, cultures and communities.Experience working in an advocacy context, specifically in the Indigenous health setting.Experience in developing and implementing First Nations community health strategies.Ability to work under supervision and direction, both individually or in a team, using routine primary health care practices and procedures and established methods.Ability to communicate across a broad range of people from community to ADF health staff.Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.Application Closing Date: Monday 25 November 2024
