Your new role
I'm currently working with a client which is a vibrant and expanding organisation within the healthcare sector.
As the Head of Merchandise, your primary responsibility is to continuously monitor and enhance category sales and gross margin performance. You'll be accountable for supplier relationships, buying processes, and relevant policies. Working closely with the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), you'll lead the buying/merchandise team and oversee the entire buying/merchandise function for our businesses.

As the Head of Merchandise, your primary responsibility is to continuously monitor and enhance category sales and gross margin performance. You'll be accountable for supplier relationships, buying processes, and relevant policies. Working closely with the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), you'll lead the buying/merchandise team and oversee the entire buying/merchandise function for our businesses.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy Delivery:
Develop, lead, and execute merchandise strategies to maximise growth opportunities across our portfolio.
Lead strategic projects aligned with our business strategy.
Drive customer-focused commercial transformation and innovation in line with corporate and merchandise goals.
Implement suitable metrics, key performance indicators, and reporting mechanisms to measure progress.
Merchandise and Category Management:
Create merchandise range plans to ensure optimal ranging, pricing, and promotional strategies.
Base ranging decisions on insights and customer feedback to meet consumer needs.
Oversee the ranging process from planning to execution, including deletion plans.
Negotiate pricing and trading terms with suppliers for the best outcomes.
Refine pricing strategies based on business objectives, market conditions, and competition.
Manage price changes to maintain margins.
Lead key tenders and supplier agreements.
Cultivate strategic relationships with key suppliers.
Provide visual merchandising strategies and support for stores.
Develop effective trade spend opportunities for suppliers.
Inventory Management:
Monitor and review stock intensity and instore inventory.
Your role also involves fostering a collaborative working culture within the broader customer team and maintaining productive relationships with pharmacies, operations, and suppliers.
Financial Management / Reporting / Budgeting:
Achieve budgeted sales and profitability for merchandise ranges.
Analyse category financial performance to identify growth opportunities.
Oversee effective category analytics and budget reporting.
Continuously measure and monitor category performance on a weekly basis.
Develop annual budgets.
Leadership:
Manage the merchandise/buying teams, ensuring best-in-class ranging for members and customers.
Lead by example, embodying purpose and guiding principles.
Foster collaborative leadership around common goals for individuals and teams.
Inspire and motivate team members and staff
What you'll need to succeed
Extensive experience in developing and implementing merchandise planning strategies to achieve sales, margin, and inventory targets.
Solid commercial and analytical skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Strong leadership and problem solving skills
Experience of working in a fast paced retail environment with strong buying/category management experience
Ideally, you are currently at Senior Category or Merchandise Manager level (or equivalent).
5-8+ years experience in retail buying/category management
