Halls Gap Zoo is situated in the foothills of the Grampians Mountain ranges, Victoria, Australia. Our
collection comprises 120 species of native and exotic mammals, reptiles and birds.
We are currently seeking an experienced keeper to work primarily with our Ungulate collection. The
species within this include Rhino, Giraffe, American Bison, Water Buffalo, Himalayan Tahr, Barbary
Sheep and more.
Working as part of a small, friendly team you will have genuine opportunities to implement new
ideas to the zoo, contribute to breeding programs, educate our visitors and make a difference.
Experience with a range of species is highly advantageous, as this role will provide the opportunity to
work with an extensive collection and may require flexibility.
Duties of the position will include:
• Daily food preparation, presentation, and husbandry for a variety of species.
• Animal observation and record keeping.
• Involvement in breeding, behavioural enrichment, and training programs.
• Assistance in animal capture and veterinary procedures.
• Visitor interactions and paid animal encounters.
• Working alongside Supervisor to improve and update standard round routines.
Desirable skills and attributes:
• Must have a minimum of 5 years' experience in a paid Zoo-Keeping position.
• Experience with Ungulates would be advantageous.
• Certificate III in Captive Animals or equivalent would be advantageous.
• Mature team player with proof of a positive attitude.
• Knowledge of behavioural and environmental enrichment techniques.
• Experience in training and conditioning.
• Proactive in identifying husbandry and enclosure related issues.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to interact with confidence with our guests and provide an educational experience.
• Passionate to connect visitors with our wildlife.
• Willing to be flexible on the rostered rounds and through the day to assist the team as required.
• Current unencumbered Full drivers' licence.
• Working with children check and first aid certificate or ability to obtain.
• You must be an Australian resident or be able to legally work in Australia.
• High level of physical fitness, we are looking for an individual who is capable of the physical
aspects of managing large hoof stock (moving hay bales/ browse).
Hours of work: Part of a rolling 4-week roster, 8-hour shifts (7.30 am to 4pm or 9am to 5.30pm)
Must be able to work weekends and public holidays.
Remuneration subject to experience and knowledge. Free onsite accommodation available for up to
three months. Moving assistance package available on request.
