About the operation & location
The Cataby mining operation is a large-scale surface mining and wet separation processing facility. The ore is processed on site to produce a Heavy Mineral Concentrate that is then transferred by road to our processing operations in Narngulu and Capel for further processing. The Cataby operation is of scale, moving up to 14 million BCM of overburden and processing 10 million tonnes of ore per annum.
The operation is located near the Town of Dandaragan, approximately 150 kilometres north of Perth. This position is offered on a Drive in Drive-out basis, on a family-friendly 5:2 / 4:3 roster.
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Geotechnical / Tailings Engineer to join Iluka's Technical Services team, based at our Cataby Mining Operation. This permanent position will provide the successful candidate with a unique opportunity to optimise and maintain safe mining and tailings stream depositions.
Reporting directly to the Senior Mining Engineer, the main responsibilities of this role include:
Providing specialist technical support to our operational teams
Leading geotechnical and hydrogeological field programs and investigations
Identifying and implementing innovative geotechnical and tailings storage facility (TSF) design solutions in a timely manner
Manage the development, operation and closure of TSFs at Site and all the engineering aspects including planning, site characterisation, risk management and deposition plans
Undertake qualitative and quantitative stability assessments identifying factors of safety
Implementing, refining, and administering a TSF management system
Contributing to the preparation of fit-for-purpose TSF design, construction management, operational, rehabilitation, and closure plans
Preparing detailed work scopes for consultants and contractors and managing resulting contracts
Sharing knowledge with and mentoring colleagues
About you
To be successful for this role, you will have:
Experience working as an engineering geologist or geotechnical engineer, a significant part of which was gained within mining operations
Experience developing and using stability assessment and basic water balance models to identify and understand slope stability and liquefaction risks and tailings management
Experience contributing to multi-disciplinary studies in varying climatic, environmental, geological, and cultural settings
Completed or be eligible to complete a tailings management course, an approved WHS risk management unit for RSP - TAILINGS; and applicable legislation examination for RSP - TAILINGS
Insight of ANCOLD guidelines and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management
Chartered Professional status in the Geotechnical (Mining) field or similar or be able to obtain such recognition
