The Role
Birdon's legal team works cross-functionally and across multiple jurisdictions to support the delivery of Birdon's projects and its strategic growth in Australia and worldwide.
As the General Counsel, you will play a central role in overseeing all Legal and Governance functions for our growing operations. You will ensure the legal requirements and mitigate risks for the specific needs of each of our divisions according to their risk profile but also act as a well-rounded legal advisor to our enterprise support services. You will work across all facets of our commercial contracts, advise on regulatory matters affecting our projects and strategic growth areas.

Responsibilities:
Provide expert and strategic legal advice to the management team on all business-related issues.
Oversee the work of outside counsel and coordinate legal matters handled by them.
Develop and lead a professional team of lawyers who provide quality advice and outstanding internal customer service.
Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and industry standards.
Manage the legal functions of the company, including litigation, contract negotiations, intellectual property rights, and compliance issues.
Develop and lead corporate legal strategy to promote and protect the company's interests.
Foster a corporate conscience and set the tone of the company's ethical culture.
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts and agreements.
Advise on risk management and mitigation strategies.
Ensure appropriate corporate housekeeping and maintenance of records and stay updated on relevant legal developments and industry trends.

You Have:
Essential:
Tertiary qualification in law and a current Australian practicing certificate.
Possess strong legal instincts – you possess a strong legal foundation developed from tackling a variety of projects at past roles.
You are a quick learner who enjoys new challenges and being outside your comfort zone.
Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively with others at all levels of the organization.
You can synthesise and communicate recommendations to stakeholders and senior management in a concise yet thorough way.
Solid experience as an "in-house" lawyer in small to medium sized organisation.
Strong negotiating skills with both legal and financial/commercial issues.
High integrity and excellent judgment, supported by a point of view that is thought out and communicated well.
Service-oriented team player with a "make it happen safely" attitude.
You are self-motivated, thoughtful and passionate about effecting change within the organisation and hold yourself accountable for delivering key outcomes.
Desirable:
A working understanding of commercial and defence marine service industry, as well as maintenance, service and class compliance practices, is highly advantageous.
Comfortable working with, and influencing all levels of internal and external stakeholders, including military, government and commercial customers.
In-house experience most recently backed up by time spent in medium to large law firm.
Experience working with safety management systems and as a safety leader.
