Position Overview
Macquarie University is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced General Counsel that serves as the Chief Legal Officer for the University.
The General Counsel provides executive leadership and oversight to a team of professionals in the delivery of legal, secretariat, governance, records, auditing and compliance services to the University, and expert counsel to the Vice-Chancellor and University Executive to support the advancement of the strategic goals of the University.
Key Responsibilities

Lead the institutional response to the legal and compliance needs of the University.
Provide expert and strategic legal counsel at an executive leadership level.
Provide leadership in the identification, mitigation and management of legal risk, ensuring that the University operates in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, and higher education standards.
Advise on matters relating to ethics, regulatory requirements, conflicts of interest, intellectual property, technology transfer and University industry collaborations.
Monitor relevant legislative changes and provide timely and clear updates to the University community on relevant legal developments.
Oversee the management of all litigation involving the University, including the selection and management of external legal representation.
Manage the provision of legal services to the University to ensure timely and effective delivery of those services.
Demonstrate experience or aptitude for oversight of governance matters in a Board, university or non-profit sector organisation.
Provide leadership in the development, implementation, review and update of University policies in response to evolving legal and regulatory standards, institutional need and best practices.
Represent the University in professional organisations and maintain relationships with peer institutions to stay abreast of emerging legal issues in the higher education sector.
Provide leadership of the people and teams within the Office of the General Counsel ensuring efficient and effective service provision.

Qualifications
The successful applicant will be admitted to practise as a lawyer in NSW and will have demonstrable leadership experience gained in a corporate legal environment. This position requires a strong knowledge of a broad range of legal practice including property law, administrative law, contracts, procurement, health law, intellectual property law, disputes, IT, corporate law and employment law. The appointee will be an experienced leader of people and will possess personal attributes that include integrity and fairness, a collaborative approach and a high level of initiative and personal accountability. A knowledge of or experience working in the Higher Education sector would be highly desirable.
