Job Description:
The Financial Counsellor offers comprehensive support to individuals and families facing financial difficulties, assessing contributing factors and providing informed options to manage and resolve financial issues. This role involves advocating on behalf of clients, engaging in casework, and negotiating with creditors to find solutions. Operating within a team environment, the Financial Counsellor delivers services with a focus on client empowerment and financial literacy, ensuring clients can actively participate in managing their financial situations. Regular collaboration with team members and external services is essential to ensure holistic client support.
Key Duties:
Provide tailored financial counselling services, including assessments, casework, and systemic advocacy.
Advocate on behalf of clients with creditors and financial institutions to resolve debts and financial issues.
Offer education and resources on financial literacy and related matters to clients and other professionals.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date case notes, records, and data.
Stay up-to-date with relevant laws, including credit, bankruptcy, and hardship schemes, ensuring best practices in service delivery.
Participate in continuous professional development to maintain accreditation and deliver high-quality services.
Skills and Experience:
Diploma of Financial Counselling and eligibility for membership with a relevant professional body.
Previous experience in a financial counselling or case management role, with a focus on client support.
Strong knowledge of credit laws, bankruptcy processes, and financial hardship solutions.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage difficult conversations.
Proven ability to work independently and make informed decisions in a client-centred environment.
Experience working with individuals affected by family violence or gambling harm is highly desirable.
