The Role
An established family enterprise managing 11,500 hectares near Inglestone in Southwest Queensland, with long-serving staff, is expanding their team and looking for an experienced, predominantly cropping farm hand. The 220 Angus breeders are a small element of the business, grazing on the less arable portions of the property; although some experience in this area would be advantageous, the primary focus of the role is the cropping program.
This role would involve you in all aspects of the cropping program—a five-year rotation of Wheat, Chickpeas, and Sorghum—and would require you to be comfortable operating most cropping machinery, including autosteer GPS systems. Mechanical and fabrication skills would be advantageous to assist with the general maintenance and repair of the well-equipped fleet, which includes John Deere tractors, brand-new Boss planters, Miller front boom sprayers, and Weedit chasers.
Ideally, you would be HR or HC licenced; the employer is not looking for a truck driver, but there will be the odd occasion that local grain deliveries would be needed in one of the semis or road trains. Your prospective employer is careful to ensure that all tasks are shared evenly with all staff undertaking a variety of tasks across the operation. Staff management is something that they do well, evidenced by their continued staff retention for long periods of time.
The cattle element is a small proportion of the operation, with all progeny sold upon weaning; the cattle are mustered using bikes. However, there is the option to use stock horses if staff prefer, and facilities are available to accommodate them.
The Offer
As the successful candidate, you would be comfortably accommodated on-farm in addition to negotiating a quality hourly-rate remuneration package, including utilities, near new work vehicle and monthly fuel allowance for private use. Living on the property, you would be approximately 130km from Goondiwindi, 195km from Dalby, 50 km from Meandarra and Westmar, just 24 kilometres down the road. Both Westmar and Meandarra are friendly communities, with the Westmar school offering Kindy through to Year 6 and a nearby bus stop.
The Ideal Candidate
The role will be best suited to a cropping-focused machinery operator with a team-centred ethos who enjoys working for a quality family operation and has the following:
Understanding and ability to undertake the cropping cycle Cattle husbandry skills (advantageous) Mechanical aptitude and fabrication skills Strong communication and interpersonal skills HR or HC licence (preferred) Register your interest
