Strategic leadership opportunity with State Government Great impact on strategic direction of Queensland maritime policy and regulation Delivering tangible benefits and value to the community Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is a branch of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) within the Customer Services, Safety and Regulation (CSSR) Division.
Our role in MSQ is to protect Queensland's waterways and the people who use them – providing safer, cleaner seas.
The position of Executive Director (Policy, Planning and Regulation) requires strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to oversee policy, planning, legislative, and regulatory responsibilities for maritime matters across Queensland.
This key leadership role directly contributes to MSQ's goal of protecting Queensland's waterways and ensuring safer, cleaner seas for the community.
You will be responsible for negotiating strategic policy and business outcomes with key external stakeholders, including QLD government agencies, other states, local government, authorities, and industry bodies.
In addition, you will represent the General Manager, MSQ, in departmental meetings and external forums related to MSQ initiatives.
Increasing stakeholder and community awareness of safe waterway operations will also be a key focus.
This includes developing state-wide compliance and education strategies to ensure broader public engagement.
You will lead the implementation of major change initiatives aimed at improving maritime safety, as well as environmental and operational outcomes across Queensland.
In your leadership role, you will guide the Policy, Planning and Regulation section, modelling behaviours that support a whole-of-agency approach to initiatives.
Additionally, you will provide strategic direction and expert advice to the General Manager, MSQ, Deputy-Director General, Director-General, and Minister on maritime policy matters.
This role requires a strategic executive leader with knowledge and understanding of the process of government and a proven track record of success as an executive or senior manager within a large, complex and decentralised organisation.
You will ideally possess a knowledge and understanding of maritime safety matters and industry developments at the departmental, state, national and international level, including their implications for MSQ and the government of the day.
With strong stakeholder management skills, you will develop effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including equivalent agencies in other states, local government, authorities and industry bodies, to negotiate and influence outcomes on behalf of MSQ.
