In this mission critical role, you will lead the operations of AFWI, be responsible for delivering transformational leadership in the establishment, development, implementation and ongoing growth of this national research institute. In driving the innovative breakthroughs in forestry, wood processing, bioproducts and climate research, the role will significantly improve the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of the Australian forestry and forest products industry. You will strengthen existing partnerships and actively promote new collaborations with external parties, other universities, research institutes, industry, government, and the wider community locally, nationally and internationally that will positively contribute to actioning AFWI's strategies and delivering on its priorities and purpose.
What's Required As a highly successful senior leader in forestry and/or forest products innovation, you will bring to the role demonstrated ability in facilitating research, development and industry engagement, with substantial experience in developing and delivering strategic directions and oversight of high-quality end-user focused research. Previous experience of leading and managing a research institute, research centre or other multiple large-scale research programs will enable you to effectively deliver on the objectives of this role. Proven ability to manage contractual obligations, strategic directions, finances, human resources, audit and risk, and governance obligations will enable you to set, operationalise and activate strategy into specific actions. With a strong record in team building and creating effective working relationships, highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, along with a capacity to foster positive and effective workplace culture including implementing equity and diversity policies and practices will be the key to your success.

About AFWI Australian Forest and Wood Innovations (AFWI) is a collaboration between the Australian Government and the University of Tasmania, dedicated to advancing research and innovation in forestry and wood products. As a national initiative, AFWI is on a mission to address climate change challenges, enhance the resilience and sustainability of the forestry and forest product industries, and cultivate the research talent crucial for the growth of these vital sectors. AFWI will collaborate with industry through science, research, and innovation to deliver positive environmental, social, and economic outcomes for Australia's forest and wood products industries. This significant research will be undertaken by three Research Centres and though national open calls for research proposals.
