About the Role The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is seeking an Executive Director Forestry and Hunting to lead the development and delivery of regulatory services, extension and advice, and research to support the state's forestry and forest products industries, hunting sector, and the delivery of ecologically sustainable forest management.
This role is responsible for driving innovation and overseeing research across critical areas such as forest ecology, biosecurity, carbon, climate, bioenergy, and resource assessment.
You will lead and manage research initiatives, ensuring the delivery of high-quality regulatory and administrative services, including licensing, auditing, and strategic advice, to support industries like hunting, timber, carbon, and environmental plantations.
In addition, you will provide leadership and strategic direction to senior executives, including the Deputy Secretary and Secretary, and ensure clarity of goals and outcomes across a dedicated team.
A key aspect of the role is engaging with Ministers, industry advisory groups, and senior stakeholders to deliver programs that meet the needs of specialised client and industry groups.
As the Department's principal representative, you will negotiate and collaborate with industry leaders, community organisations, and both Commonwealth and State agencies to shape the future of NSW's forestry and hunting sectors.

To be successful in this role, you will have: Relevant tertiary qualifications in a public administration, commercial or business-related discipline, or related professional/technical qualification and/or substantial demonstrated equivalent experience Proven experience and a demonstrated record in senior executive strategic management of a significant program, programs or functions which involve regular and substantial client, industry and stakeholder engagement Demonstrated knowledge and comprehension of current and emerging issues and risks which impact the sustainability of forest and hunting resources across NSW.
You'll be someone who can: Operate with a high level of autonomy and be fully and directly accountable for the advice you provide to all levels of government and stakeholders Effectively lead the support of the Minister, Secretary, and Deputy Secretary while handling politically sensitive issues with significant public visibility that impact the community, industry, economy, and environment Demonstrate a solid understanding of government decision making systems and processes.

The Forestry and Hunting Branch of the Group oversees forestry and hunting responsibilities, including the Plantations and Reafforestation Act 1999 and parts of the Forestry Act 2012.
It develops forestry policy per the NSW Forestry Industry Roadmap, drawing on forestry science expertise.
The Branch administers the Game and Feral Animal Control Act 2002, handles hunter licensing, education, compliance, and manages essential hunting programs, supporting the Game and Pest Management Advisory Board.
