About the schoolThe School of Philosophy & Theology takes a leading role in the exploration and realization of the University's Objects. We deliver the core curriculum, wherein students are introduced to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition of faith and reason, to all students in the University. Our programs explore the Catholic intellectual tradition, but also encourage students to consider and question the fundamental assumptions we make about life itself. Our Philosophy degree prepares students for a wide variety of professions including teaching, public policy, international diplomacy, and advocacy. The Theology degree is for students who wish to pursue personal and spiritual growth or their specific vocational and ministerial goals.
About the roleThe School seeks expressions of interest from experienced Academics, who have a passion for teaching. Teaching opportunities are available on a sessional basis across a variety of programs. Our main current need is for academics formed in the Catholic Intellectual tradition who would be interested in teaching into the Core.
We are looking for sessionals with subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Philosophy informed by Catholic TheologyCatholic Theology informed by PhilosophyHistory of PhilosophySacramental TheologyMoral TheologyBioethics - philosophical or theological Bioethics in the Catholic traditionKey ResponsibilitiesConduct tutorials/lectures to the standard of the School, which includes preparing lesson plans for tutorials/lectures and facilitating informed group discussions to enhance student engagement.Consultation with students in relation to readings, weekly topics, and upcoming assessments.Assisting with assessment administration, such as marking, entering results, and providing feedback to students as required.Attend meetings as required by the Course Coordinator/Program Coordinator.Identify students at risk by thorough tutorial attendance recording.Qualifications, skills & experienceSupportive of the Objects of Notre Dame as a Catholic UniversityQualified to at least one AQF qualification level higher than the course of study being taught, or with equivalent professional experience. A minimum of an undergraduate qualification.Prior teaching experience at the tertiary level with sound understanding of pedagogical and/or adult learning principles.Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.Ability to deliver quality learning and teaching practices in multiple modes including online delivery.Demonstrated ability in developing resources/curriculum documents as well as criteria and standards based assessment tasks.Ability to, or a willingness to learn how to, incorporate technology (e.g. Blackboard, Zoom, email, internet) into teaching and learning.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to foster high levels of collegiality and ability to empathize with students.Proven ability to assess priority of tasks, manage workload and meet deadlines, in a busy education environment.How to applyPlease apply online with a resume and cover letter outlining your suitability for the role.
