BenarNews is seeking a skilled and Pacific Islands-focused journalism professional to write, rewrite, edit, and add value to stories produced by its expanding Pacific news service for publication on its English-language website and major social media platforms. BenarNews is a digital media platform at Radio Free Asia that provides clear and accurate news on political, social and economic issues including security, climate change, human rights; strategic competition among nations; health and environment; on the local and regional level in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Pacific Island nations.
This full-time position will be based in BenarNews' Brisbane office and a successful applicant must have Australian work rights.
Monitor current and developing events in the Pacific region Edit/rewrite English content at a consistently high standard for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and flow, under sometimes intense time pressure Publish content on the BenarNews website and associated social media platforms in a timely manner Use sound editorial judgment in helping select stories and develop coverage plans in support of the BenarNews mission Liaise closely with and sub-edit stories from BenarNews correspondents and journalists Assist in recruiting and maintaining a network of stringers in Pacific Island nations Transform stories submitted by journalists for whom English is a second or third language, crafting them for a wider audience with the appropriate context and level of detail Use sound visual skills and ethics in selecting photographs and supporting visual storytelling Run operations when the Head of News is on leave or in the field Work collaboratively with BenarNews/Radio Free Asia journalists and stringers in other countries Promote the quality, credibility, and visibility of the BenarNews brand; uphold and adhere to RFA's code of journalistic ethics and editorial guidelines Other duties as assigned Minimum 10 years journalism experience in a professional newsroom environment Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or other related field from an accredited college or university. Excellent writing and editing experience powered by rigorous research skills and an eye for detail Extensive knowledge and understanding of current political, economic and social conditions in the Pacific region Strong networks in the region that can be tapped for newsgathering Working knowledge of one or more Pacific region languages well regarded Experience with publishing content online and to social media Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work effectively with diverse cultures and personalities Proven record of integrity and ethical decision-making in a journalism setting Bachelor's degree, preferably in the field of journalism
