About the Business Unit The Department of Justice and Community Safety (Youth Justice) is responsible for the statutory supervision of children and young people (young people) in the criminal justice system in Victoria focussing on prevention, diversion, and early intervention as the most effective and fiscally responsible ways of reducing youth crime.
Youth Justice Custodial Services aim to engage children and young people in change by addressing their offending behaviour and equipping them with the skills required for positive community participation, within a safe and secure environment. The Youth Justice custodial precincts in Victoria are managed by the Department of Justice and Community Safety:
Parkville Youth Justice Precinct is in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Parkville, approximately five kilometres from the central business district. Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precinct, located to the west of Werribee. Youth Justice custodial precincts accommodate 10-18-year-old children and young people who have been remanded or sentenced by the Criminal Division of the Children's Court, and some 18-21-year-olds sentenced by Adult Courts to a youth justice custodial precinct.
About the Role A key leadership position, the role is responsible for leading a best practice youth justice precinct and driving rehabilitation and positive development of children and young people.
The Director will have direct oversight of custodial operations and service provision across the facility including education, rehabilitation, health, mental health and other program delivery designed to support strong rehabilitation outcomes for young people.
The role is responsible for creating and sustaining a workforce culture built on well-defined values, professional excellence, and teamwork. It will implement key initiatives and business plans to provide an effective and safe Youth Justice custodial system.
Some of your duties will include:
Lead a best practice youth justice precinct and motivate staff to deliver effective rehabilitation services and interventions and security arrangements in line with the Youth Justice Strategic Plan and Custodial Operating philosophy. Direct, lead and manage custodial services for children and young people, including the delivery of quality outcomes and programs and drive high levels of compliance with procedures to provide an effective and safe custodial system. Provide oversight and management of an integrated delivery approach between clinical services, education providers, health and mental health services, education, cultural support, specialist behavioural intervention and a fully structured day for young people. About you To be successful in this role, you will have:
Has demonstrated leadership presence in an operational environment. Has been successful in motivating all levels of a staffing group to deliver high quality services and has experience building a coherent, capable, and well-functioning team. Has specialist experience, coupled with significant achievement in operating within a custodial environment. This includes experience delivering best practice environments and leading staff to best support young people to change. Significant experience and authoritative knowledge of case management arrangements for young people with very complex needs and understands how to motivate adolescents. Qualifications An appropriate tertiary qualification in youth work, criminology, public policy, or other social sciences fields will be highly regarded, and relevant work experience.
