CBC Fremantle is a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition for boys in Years 7-12. Founded by the Christian Brothers in 1901, the College has an outstanding reputation for having served the local Fremantle community for over a century. The
Deputy Principal – Pastoral Care
is responsible for ensuring that the pastoral care of students at the school is appropriate and dynamic, and leading the area of student wellbeing at the College. The successful applicant will be a committed and innovative leader who thrives in an environment of challenge and change. This role is undertaken in conjunction with the Principal and involves working collaboratively with other key leadership staff.
Key Selection Criteria
The successful applicant will:
Maintain active membership of the Catholic Church and give witness to their personal faith and commitment by integrating a Catholic vision in all areas of their responsibility and being a faith leader in the College.
Exhibit comprehensive knowledge and understanding of effective contemporary practices in pastoral care and wellbeing at a national and international level, and understand how they relate to the unique context of CBC Fremantle.
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of CBC's rites of passage context and 'The Journey' and how they inform pastoral care.
Be able to lead, model and articulate differentiated pastoral care, understanding the difference between equity and equality.
Have experience and understanding of boys' education, formation and development and the pivotal role of partnerships between schools and families.
Have proven capacity to lead highly effective teams.
Be able to express their personal vision for the effective pastoral care of students.
Be willing to become an active member of the CBC Fremantle community with a strong commitment to promoting and supporting the varied aspects of College life.
Clearly exhibit leadership characteristics including competence, intrinsic motivation, vision, integrity and diligence.
Have completed, or be close to completing, all the requirements for
Accreditation to Lead in a Catholic School.
Have well developed written and oral communication skills.
Have excellent interpersonal skills.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:
Lead the pastoral care of students in a rites of passage context, overseeing the 'The CBC Journey' Program and applying it to dealings with students, staff and families.
Lead the use of effective practices in student wellbeing, including continuing the implementation of an overall Year 7-12 framework for mental health and wellbeing.
Provide effective leadership and support in the establishment and maintenance of positive relationships between staff and students.
Lead the Pastoral Board, convening and chairing regular Pastoral Board meetings for the evaluation and revision of wellbeing and pastoral care programs and initiatives, collegial discussion of student wellbeing outcomes, and developing shared knowledge of best practice and procedure.
Lead and design the implementation of wellbeing initiatives using data, incorporating appropriate responses at a whole school level.
Provide clear and competent leadership for all Heads of House, School Psychologists, Head of Student Leadership and the Rite Journey, Year 7 Transition Coordinator, Academic Care and other staff as appropriate at the College to ensure the needs of students are met in a systematic and supportive manner.
Continue to develop and lead the College pastoral and wellbeing programs such as Extended Mentor, Pastoral Periods and one-off events in the interests of ensuring that the school meets the spiritual, emotional and social needs of its students.
Encourage the College community to have high expectations and aspire to excellence in all aspects of student pastoral care.
Share responsibility with Deputy Principal Teaching & Learning for the continued implementation of the College academic and wellbeing tracking program.
Contribute to the formulation and implementation of College policy.
Take a leadership role in the coordination of relevant school events, including, but not restricted to, College House Week, Mental Health Week, WEDD Cup and Edmund Rice Day.
Consider and plan whole school professional learning opportunities for staff that are consistent with the pastoral care direction and needs of the College.
Provide parent education opportunities relating to adolescent health and wellbeing.
Work collaboratively with all staff focusing on student behaviour, wellbeing, attendance of classes and College events, and oversee the management of individual student health and medical needs.
Oversee the co-curricular offerings at the College.
Be a collegial and active member of the College Leadership Team.
Attend and contribute to all Parent Information Evenings on the topic of pastoral care.
Provide leadership and support for co-curricular activities.
Be a visible presence around the school.
Undertake any other duties as reasonably required by the Principal.
Commencing 1 January 2025.
0.2 Teaching Load.
The remuneration for this position will be commensurate with CEWA Deputy Principal salaries according to qualifications, skills and experience.
The contract of employment is for a term of ten years subject to successful formative and summative reviews during second and fifth years respectively. At the conclusion of the ten-year period, the position will be advertised with the incumbent welcome to re-apply.
