About you
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to lead our veterinary services team, drive research and conservation efforts, and ensure the highest standards of animal ethics and welfare.
As the Head of Veterinary Services at Perth Zoo, you will oversee all aspects of our animal health services. This includes managing our animal hospital, leading veterinary procedures, and supervising a team of skilled professionals. You will play a crucial role in our clinical medicine program, disease investigation projects, and emergency animal health care services. Additionally, you will drive research partnerships, manage conservation projects, and provide training for veterinary staff and students. This position also encompasses the critical responsibility of wildlife response initiatives, ensuring timely and effective care for wildlife in need and leads the animal welfare and ethics agenda for Perth Zoo.
Job Description
Clinical Leadership: Oversee and lead all aspects of Perth Zoo's animal health services, including the animal hospital, veterinary procedures, and emergency care.
Animal Welfare and Ethics: Leading the development and implementation of the animal welfare agenda in collaboration with the Animal Welfare and Ethics Manager, ensuring that all veterinary practices align with established ethical standards.
Research and Conservation: Drive research partnerships, manage conservation projects, and provide training for veterinary staff and students.
Departmental Management: Manage the veterinary team's training, professional development, and performance and oversee the department's budget and strategic planning.
This position may be required to work on a rostered basis on weekends and public holidays.
Prior to commencement, the successful applicant will be required to possess or obtain a current and satisfactory National Police Check and complete a pre-employment medical and preventative vaccination program.

Minimum 3 years of experience in a veterinarian leadership role. Demonstrated experience in leadership and ability to develop, mentor, and support a clinical veterinary team. Demonstrated knowledge of animal husbandry and management practices in relation to wild animal care in a zoo or similar environment, including breeding, nutrition, biosecurity, animal housing and enclosure design. Demonstrated experience and skills in driving research, conservation and/or other collaborative partnerships. Demonstrated clinical experience in providing veterinary care for wild animals in a zoo or similar environment, including medicine, surgery, disease investigation and chemical restraint of a range of species.
