The opportunity The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.
In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.
The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means 'sharing sky and stars' in the Wajarri language.
The SKA-Low Data Processing Software Engineer will help support, integrate and further develop the software systems that process the huge amount of data received by the SKA-Low Telescope.
Are you a software engineer, computer scientist or astronomer with a passion for software development and big data? Would you like to work on the world's largest low frequency radio telescope? If you have a software, computing, astronomy or physics degree and an interest in big data science and programming with Python, we'd love to hear from you.

Your duties will include: Work in a team to develop, integrate and maintain distributed data pipelines, running on dedicated High Performance Computing platforms. Troubleshoot operational issues in collaboration with other teams, in particular HPC platform and storage engineers. Work as part of the SKAO Scaled Agile Framework international team. Collaborate with other software development teams based in the SKAO member countries. Location: Perth, Western Australia
Salary: AU$93,267 - AU$105,517 plus 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need: Essential A degree in computer science, data science, astronomy or related field. Experience with parallel programming, preferably running on High-Performance Computing (HPC). Experience with Python programming and modern software development practices, including version control, git workflows and technical documentation. Desirable Experience in scientific computing and/or performance optimisation techniques/tools, especially in terms of I/O. Knowledge of radio astronomy calibration and imaging techniques and/or software tools. Experience of working in a multicultural environment across international boundaries and time zones.
