Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR)
Cyber Security EngineerCanberra ACT
Reporting to the SecOps Engineering Team Lead, the Cyber Security Engineer will be responsible for the maintenance of Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) as well as other cyber security log collection, monitoring and analysis toolsets. The successful candidate will take a lead role in building future capabilities and system improvements. The SecOps Engineering Team is one of three teams that directly supports DEWR's Security Operations Centre (SOC).
DEWR's SOC utilises industry leading SIEM and EDR capabilities in a complex hybrid network that provides critical government services to the Australian public, as well as information technology services to client agencies.
The successful candidate will be a capable Cyber Security Engineer that takes a proactive approach to deliver high quality outcomes for DEWR's SOC. They will also be willing to learn new skills, can work effectively with other IT specialist teams and will look to continuously improve our systems to detect and prevent cyber security threats.
Please note that positions are available at both the Executive Level 1 and Executive Level 1 IT Specialist Designations, depending on the individual skills and experience of successful candidates. Specialist positions are subject to eligibility requirements outlined in the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations Enterprise Agreement 2024-27, and are only offered at the discretion of the delegate.
The key duties of the position include:Responsibilities of the Executive Level 1 Cyber Security Engineer include:
Implementing and maintaining Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Defender XDR systems in a multitenant environment.Leading strategic planning for security operations, integrating advanced threat intelligence and automation to enhance organisational resilience.Providing advice and guidance on the implementation and enforcement of security controls across all technological environments, including on-premise, cloud-based and automated systems.Onboarding new log sources to the SIEM and Centralised logging systems.Developing detections using Kusto Query Language (KQL).Responding to alerts and incidents related to the availability of log collection and analysis systems.Sharing skills and knowledge with team members to build team resilience and capacity.Creating, updating and maintaining comprehensive documentation of information technology systems.Please note, under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing.
This is a designated security assessed position. The successful candidate will have the ability to obtain and maintain a NV1 security clearance.
This selection process may be used to establish a merit pool. The pool might be accessed to fill ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies for similar roles in the Department over the next 18 months.
