The opportunity Great opportunity for an early career researcher with a PhD in bioinformatics or genomics Launch your career at Australia's National Research Organisation Work at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Geelong CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system. CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) is seeking a CERC Fellow with experience in bioinformatics and genomics to deliver projects within ACDP's World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Bluetongue Reference Laboratory. Bluetongue is a WOAH-listed transboundary arboviral disease of ruminants that poses a significant and increasing threat to Australia's agricultural industries. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of next-generation molecular diagnostic pipelines and decision support tools to enhance Bluetongue virus characterisation, surveillance, and outbreak preparedness. Your duties will include: Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes. Recognise and utilise opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research. Utilise design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals, and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects. Record, manage, and analyse data/information using relevant domain data science techniques. Collaborate both within CSIRO and externally as directed, including with government and industry stakeholders. Location: Geelong, VIC Salary: AU$96k - AU$105k plus up to 15.4% superannuation Tenure: Specified term of 3 years Reference: 97880 To be considered you will need: A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as bioinformatics or genomics. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience. Practical experience with HTS analysis and bioinformatics techniques, such as genome assembly, metagenomics, transcriptomics, phylogenetics, evolutionary or microbiome analysis. Evidence of advanced data analytics and programming capabilities in at least one language relevant for bioinformatics (e.g., Python, R, BASH). High level written and oral communication skills with the proven ability to present research outcomes at national and international conferences and by publication in peer-reviewed journals. The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research. Proven experience developing workflow solutions on high-performance computer (HPC) servers using Snakemake, Nextflow, BASH or similar.
