There are approximately 1000 births annually and staffing includes experienced midwives. High risk births are managed in conjunction with the other Hospitals in the State, supported by the local endocrinology and diabetic teams.
The unit is supported by a Level 4 Neonatal Unit and an 8 bed Level 4 Intensive Care Unit. The outreach services are located at picturesque regional centres.
This position will be attractive to highly skilled and motivated medical professionals who view challenges as opportunities and are driven by a passion to improve healthcare in the complex world of modern health systems. The right applicants will play a key role in developing health care at both patient and system levels. Fellows of the Australian College for Rural and Remote Medicine and Fellows of the Australian College of General Practitioners with the relevant skills and qualifications are encouraged to apply.
The DoH offers a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate clinical training program, with close ties to the University of Tasmania through the Rural Clinical School. As such, you will be responsible for providing leadership and help with the delivery of the Undergraduate general medical education program.
The University of Tasmania's Rural Clinical School is co-sited and provides a strong academic and educational focus including access to simulation opportunities. Trainees participate in weekly teaching including on-site tutorials, the state-wide primary tutorials via videoconference and simulation activities.
The Service:The health service has the main acute 160 bed teaching Hospital (with a rural clinical school attached) and a 70 bed Private Hospital, the other acute Hospital is located a short distance away and has 130 beds.
A busy rural regional hospital with a diverse spread of surgical procedures performed including ENT, Orthopaedic Surgery, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dental Surgery, Endoscopy, Ophthalmology, ECT and a limited amount of Paediatric Surgery.
The Location:Located in a beautiful seaport city with a population of 20,000 people, this region is unspoilt and within easy drive of rugged mountains, spectacular wilderness, and sparkling highland lakes. Unpolluted coastal seas and rich fertile soils enable local produce to be some of the world's finest foods.
Enjoy four distinct seasons, the surrounding oceans give Tasmania a moderate climate without the scorching heat of many parts of Australia or the 'deep freeze' winters that affect Northern Hemisphere countries at similar latitudes.
