About Abergeldie Abergeldie is a locally owned contractor with close to 30 years' industry experience in Australia and New Zealand. We design and deliver projects in the Water, Bridges, Transport, Underground, Energy and Remediation industry sectors.
Projects include dams, bridges, tunnels, water and wastewater treatment process facilities, rail infrastructure, mining infrastructure, electrical substations, marine works and pipeline rehabilitation: the complex infrastructure needed to build better communities.
About the Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Commercial Lead with a strong contractual or legal background to join our Water/Utilities team.
As the Commercial Lead, you will play a pivotal role in the financial, contractual, and operational success of a complex infrastructure project. You will work collaboratively with our commercial, project and management teams, taking ownership of all commercial and contractual aspects of the project, protecting the business from commercial risk and ensuring successful project delivery.
This role is initially supporting a key project on the Central Coast of NSW and can be based at our site or at our Regents Park head office(with regular time spent at our project on the Central Coast).
Key Responsibilities of the role include:
Contract Management: Responsibility for the preparation, review, and negotiation of subcontracts and supply agreements. Risk Management: Identifying, evaluating, and mitigating head contract and subcontract commercial and contractual risks throughout the project lifecycle. Negotiation: Managing high-level negotiations with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure the achievement of commercial and project outcomes including leading weekly project commercial meetings. Stakeholder Management: Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal teams, clients, and other key stakeholders. Team Leadership: Providing commercial advice and mentoring to project managers and junior commercial team members. What you'll bring to the team You will be a Commercialor Legal professional who has extensive experience working on infrastructure projects (with a solid understanding of contracts). You will be a natural problem solver and creative thinker who excels in an environment that fosters and celebrates innovative approaches to tackling complex commercial challenges. Your negotiation skills and contractual knowledge will be essential to achieving favourable outcomes, mitigating risks, and maximizing project performance.
Bringing extensive experience in drafting, negotiating, and managing contracts, along with a proven ability to optimize project financial performance on construction projects, is essential. Expertise in navigating complex contracts for major infrastructure projects is required, thriving in a role that leverages strong commercial resolution, influencing, and negotiation skills. Exceptional relationship-building and communication skills (both verbal and written) are crucial, as is a solid background in developing and mentoring others.
What We're Looking For: A degree in Law, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or a related field. Professional legal qualifications (LLB, JD) are highly desirable. 7+ years of experience in a commercial management, legal or contract management role. Exposure to the construction, infrastructure, or engineering industries is preferred but not essential. Strong understanding and application of contract law, along with the ability to apply same to complex engineering scenarios. Exceptional communication and drafting skills including notices, letters and other communications. Proven negotiation skills with the ability to achieve favorable outcomes whilst retaining important relationships. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on the achievement of pragmatic solutions. Ability to work effectively under pressure in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to develop, lead and implement commercial strategy within complex projects. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
