RoleWodonga Middle Years College acknowledges the relationship between the physical and emotional wellbeing of students and their success in school and life beyond school.
The College Nurse assists with promoting and protecting the health of the students, staff and visitors.
They monitor the health status of the College's population and provide first aid care.
As one of the first points of contact for the College, the College Nurse needs to display sensitivity, flexibility, and confidentiality in their dealings with students, staff and parents.
The College Nurse will need to be a team player with strong communication skills and will work closely with the First Aid Officers at both campuses.
It is the responsibility of the College Nurse to inform Executive immediately of any critical/unusual incidents and any potential issues relating to the health of individual students and staff that may arise in the course of the day.
The College Nurse has a reasonable amount of autonomy in the day to day operations, however, should seek direction and/or clarification from medical/paramedical experts for any serious injury or illness, or any incident or issue and any subsequent action which presents to, or occurs in, the First Aid room.
ResponsibilitiesNursing and First Aid Duties: Attend to medical needs of students, staff and visitors as required.Management of student anaphylaxis and allergy action / health plans.Administer first aid to students for the purpose of providing emergency or necessary care.Be the first point of reference for First Aid and other health matters by providing basic First Aid assessments of students and staff, including pre-camp briefings and students' medical management updates, and liaising with and providing advice to staff who will be attendance on camps or other off-site activities.Provide physical support to students requiring specialised medical assistance, in accordance with established medical protocols and individual care plans.Provide skilled, trauma informed regulation and containment support to students presenting in psychological distress.Liaise with parents regarding medical and healthcare needs for their child.Consult with parents, college staff, and health professionals regarding general student health care.Support teachers, non-teaching staff and parents by explaining the special characteristic and needs of students with chronic recurring illness or disabilities.Conduct Anaphylaxis/Asthma briefings/training and any other nursing/medical briefings to staff and parents as required.Maintain and manage first aid supplies for all areas of the college and safely store and record all medications on site.Management of all student EpiPens including requesting replacements (due to expiry dates) from parents.Collaborate with school staff, and appropriate agencies to develop and implement a range of programs and interventions with students and the school community.Provide advice, expertise and leadership in policy development that guides the development of school policy and the work of others, including teachers.Implement professional support programs within the school environment, including training, development and guidance to other school staff and members of the school community.School Events: Administer first aid as required for various school activities and occasional events including attendance at various sports carnivals.Maintain and provide first aid supplies for all college activities including camps, sports and events.Ensure that the correct medication accompanies students involved in College activities.Liaise with parents prior to camps and overseas trips regarding medical and healthcare needs for their child.Work with the Wellbeing Team Leader and the Wellbeing Team to assist with the development and delivery of positive education/health programs for students when required.Administration and Compliance: Maintain detailed and accurate case notes, collect relevant data and contribute to the evaluation of the College Nurse service.Ensure that an up-to-date medical form is completed for students with medical needs.Develop and maintain Student Health Support Plans as required in accordance with Department Education guidelines.Administration of Wodonga Middle Years College's policy and procedure guidelines for Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes and other medical conditions.Be an active member of the Wodonga Middle Years College OHS Committee.Who May ApplyIndividuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfil the specific requirement of the position.
