WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
Reviewing and updating policies while maintaining compliance with our legal obligations and regulatory requirements.
As the Senior Policy Officer, you will
Develop, review, and update policies that ensure compliance with relevant Commonwealth legislation, focusing on alignment with the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability (PGPA) Act and other regulatory frameworks. Monitor and interpret Commonwealth legislation, identify emerging issues, and provide advice. Identify and mitigate potential risks in policy areas, ensuring alignment with the organisation's governance frameworks. Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of policies across the organisation, ensuring alignment with statutory and organisational objectives. Contribute to the development and maintenance of the policy library management system. Identify and escalate breaches of key compliance obligations identified during policy development and/or review. Assist with the coordination of compliance obligations including external reporting obligations (e.g. annual/quarterly reporting, committee/board papers). Develop and deliver training and awareness programs to support a culture of ethical conduct and compliance. Provide advice and support as required for Conflicts of Interest (COI), Gifts & Benefits, FOI, and Public Interest Disclosures (PID). Support the delivery of other governance initiatives or programs, as required. This is a permanent role based in Newcastle.

To be successful in the role of Senior Policy Officer, you will have previous experience in policy development and analysis, with a strong understanding of Commonwealth legislation and regulatory frameworks. You will be a natural communicator who is confident engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders utilising a pragmatic and positive approach.
Your background will demonstrate your:
Understanding of COI, Gifts & Benefits, FOI, and PID requirements, with the ability to apply this knowledge in a governance context. Proactive approach to identify and mitigate policy risks, and ability to balance specific policy needs with broader policy development goals. Experience as a subject matter expert (SME) to lead and mentor stakeholders to drive best practice governance. Ability to support stakeholders with drafting of policies and guidelines and implementing policies to ensure compliance with our obligations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Experience preparing executive briefs and governance documents and providing clear and concise advice to a range of stakeholders. Proactive approach to initiate improvements to deliver accurate and timely governance services to all stakeholders. You will have a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline or demonstrated equivalent relevant experience.
