BEAR Scotland manage and maintain over 1422 km of Scotland's trunk road network in the North West of Scotland for our client, Transport Scotland. We work in some of the most scenic but challenging parts of the country on a variety of trunk road maintenance and improvement schemes.An opportunity has arisen within BEAR Scotland's North West Minor Improvements Team for a Civil Engineer to work in our Perth office. The role would involve working within a diverse team on the investigation, procurement, construction and project management of geotechnical related projects.The North West Trunk Road Unit has many varied geotechnical challenges and working in the Minor Improvements team offers involvement in a wide range of different projects covering Geotechnical risk mitigation works, rock slope hazard mitigation, improvements to embankments and drainage, geotechnical incident response and management of projects through DMRB geotechnical certification stages.Candidates should have experience of Geotechnical related projects and risk management as well as a knowledge of health and safety, environmental and commercial aspects of schemes. Candidates should ideally be professionally qualified, or working towards professional qualification with a planned date for achievement.We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are interested in progressing their careers by helping manage the delivery of a diverse programme of work. The successful candidates will have good team working and communication skills, be flexible and hold a valid driving licence.Job Purpose:The successful candidate will assist in the investigation, design, planning, procurement and construction management of improvement works on the North West trunk road network. The postholder will work with internal and sub-contractors' resources.Responsibilities and Activities include (but are not restricted to):Compliance with technical standards following the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.Review of reports, investigations, feasibility studies and options assessments.Work as part of a team within NW Minor Improvements and with other BEAR departments.Work closely with BEAR's consultant, Jacobs UK.Work with commercial specialists to complete tender evaluations and assist with contract award.Procure, supervise and measure geotechnical related works.Work with Environmental specialists to ensure adequate environmental screening is undertaken and appropriate mitigation measures are implemented prior to work commencing.Follow Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures that form part of the company's Integrated management systems.Assist in the team's compliance with the CDM Regulations and ensure that robust risk assessments are carried out before works, operations or inspections take place.Use Transport Scotland's asset management systems and geographical inventory system to keep inventory data and as built records up to date.Prepare cost estimates and monitor the internal financial performance of individual schemes.Assist Graduate Engineers and Technicians within the team.Deliver projects within an annual programme of work.Provide timely responses to third party correspondence.Knowledge, Skills and Experience:Experience in geotechnical related projects.Professional qualification and membership of an appropriate professional body or a clear path to membership.A full approved UK driving licence.Use of Microsoft Office suite of software packages is essential.Use of AutoCAD software is desirable.Why BEAR?BEAR Scotland currently manages, maintains and improves 1962km of Scottish trunk road including over 2000 bridges and structures through some of the most scenic, but challenging, parts of the country.
