About Our ClientMiwatj Health is a leading not-for-profit Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation dedicated to improving health outcomes for the Yolngu people across East Arnhem Land. With a strong reputation for delivering culturally appropriate health services, they operate seven remote clinics throughout East Arnhem Land and employ approximately 300 staff. The organisation is seeking an experienced Chief People Officer (CPO) to guide the organisation through its next chapter, focusing on enhancing leadership, cultural safety, and strengthening the HR function.The CPO will focus on transforming strategic HR initiatives, directly overseeing the new team structure, and collaborating closely with leadership to drive cultural change and improve HR capabilities. This role requires a blend of strategic vision and hands-on management, emphasising leadership development, coaching, and cultural alignment within the team and across the organisation. The role sits as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.Job DescriptionKey ResponsibilitiesLead the People and Culture program, currently encompassing human resource management, recruitment, workplace health and safety (WH&S), and industrial relations.Provide responsive leadership to the People and Culture team, ensuring timely and professional service delivery.Review and revise existing HR policies to align with community control frameworks, developing new policies that promote inclusivity and cultural awareness.Develop and implement key HR policies, processes, and systems, including a comprehensive three-year people plan focusing on cultural competency, learning and development, and staff wellbeing.Monitor compliance with HR, WH&S, and industrial relations legislation, ensuring quality assurance processes are in place.Facilitate communication of the strategic plan throughout the organisation, emphasising the role of each employee in achieving their goals and living the values.Conduct skills assessments to identify strengths and areas for growth within the HR team, implementing targeted training programs focused on leadership and cultural awareness.Foster a culture of accountability and performance through a robust performance management system that incorporates Miwatj's values.Key ObjectivesEmbodiment of ValuesIntegrate Miwatj's unique values into daily operations and performance metrics, ensuring accountability at all levels.Empowerment of PeopleDesign and implement strategies, policies, and systems that enable employees to effectively meet strategic objectives.Develop a High-Performing HR TeamBuild and nurture an HR team that is equipped, trained, and committed to supporting the organisation's mission.The Successful ApplicantIdeal Candidate ProfileStrong Leadership and Vision: Ability to build, mentor, and lead a team in a culturally sensitive environment.Cultural Competency: Deep understanding of Aboriginal culture and a commitment to fostering respectful and culturally safe workplaces.Resilience and Adaptability: Capability to navigate the complexities of working in remote settings and rebuild HR credibility.Commitment to Development: Passion for coaching and developing themselves and others, driving leadership capability in daily interactions.Cultural Fit and SensitivityCultural alignment is critical given the focus on Aboriginal health outcomes and a diverse Indigenous workforce.
