THE ROLE
DSTG is seeking an experienced Chemist to join their Specialised Coatings & Corrosion Science (SC&CS) Group to oversee the management of hazardous chemical inventory and ensure continued compliance with WHS regulations. This is a contract position through CS Executive Group and will require the successful candidate to work 2½ days per week (or 3 days in week 1 and 2 days in the next week) until September 2025, which DSTG will review for a further 12-month extension.
Some of the tasks associated with this role include:
Provide advice on the current WHS requirements for the storage, handling and usage of hazardous substances Ensure that SC&CS Group remains informed of any changes in regulations and legislation in the transportation and storage of hazardous chemicals and that the Group's processes are changed accordingly Maintain an accurate chemical inventory for SC&CS Group, which includes hardcopy and electronic SDS libraries in line with WHS Legislation Ensure that all SDSs are current, GHS compliant, and accessible Provide support for SDS obtained from overseas (i.e., non-Australian compliant) to ensure conversion prior to acceptance onto the site and ensuring that WHS compliance is maintained Maintain a registry that ensures replacements for expired SDSs are obtained from suppliers when required Provide advice on requirements and assist in chemical induction following acquisitions, ensuring all relevant control and compliance standards are met Undertake periodic audits of SC&CS Group's stock of hazardous chemicals Provide advice on requirements and ensure chemical labelling is compliant, ensuring all labels are GHS compliant Provide advice on the requirements of Risk Assessments (RA) for all chemicals ordered and received for storage and handling – if required, affording assistance in the preparation of RAs Co-ordinate regular chemical disposals and ensure unwanted chemicals are appropriately disposed of in line with legislation and the requirements of the Department of Defence and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Victoria Attend the SC&CS Group's monthly WHS meetings, usually held on the first Thursday of each month, and provide a report of the status of the Group's chemical holdings REQUIREMENTS
You must be an Australian Citizen to be considered for this unique opportunity and be able to address the following criteria:
Qualifications from an Australian Tertiary Institution (or equivalent) in the fields of Chemistry or similar Experience with WHS practices, including performance within a chemical laboratory environment – appropriate WHS certification would be well regarded Demonstrated knowledge of research chemicals, including legislative compliance for storage, handling and use Prior experience and knowledge of working with hazardous and DG chemicals Previous management of chemical storage and handling MUST be willing to undergo and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) Security Clearance To apply, click the "Apply" button to send your resume to CS Executive Group.
