About the PositionThe ARC is seeking enthusiastic, professional, and strategically focussed officer (EL1) with particularly strong interpersonal and organisational skills to lead secretariat support in the governance and administrative functions of the ARC Board.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a small, high performing team, during a time of major reform at the ARC, while we bed down new legislation, an increased scope and mandate, and a new governance structure.The applicant will require excellent organisational skills, an ability to be flexible and proactive in approach and possess an ability to work collaboratively with staff both within the Branch and across the ARC.
This will involve confidently engaging with and supporting the ARC Board as well as external and internal stakeholders, Senior Executive and the CEO.
The key duties of the position include:Duties and TasksThe duties include but aren't limited to:
Manage and lead support for, and delivery of, meetings and services for the ARC Board.Establish and implement contemporary and corporate governance best practice initiatives to support and manage the ARC Board.Engage and collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to build effective relationships that are mutually beneficial.Provide high quality advice to the Director regarding the work of the team, including management and quality assurance of complex Board papers and items.Maintain records of board decisions and actions while ensuring compliance with legislative requirements.Support other section members where required – providing leadership and guidance to junior section members.Required Skills and KnowledgeSkills and knowledge required for this role:
Extensive experience in leading secretariat services for Boards and very senior committees.Excellent judgement, strong attention to detail and an ability to manage multiple priorities and respond flexibly in a shifting work environment.Strong written and verbal communications skills.High level of integrity, consistently maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive data and demonstrating trustworthiness in all professional interactions.Proven ability to effectively coordinate and manage committees, projects, and competing workloads, consistently adapting to shifting priorities and deadlines.Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to build and sustain strong networks and relationships within the agency and with external stakeholders.Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner, always maintaining discretion.Ability to quickly gain an understanding of the ARC's role in the Australian research landscape and the associated strategic direction of the organisation.Our ideal candidateYou will have excellent interpersonal skills, utilising a friendly and professional manner.

Getting to know the Australian Research CouncilThe ARC is a non-corporate Commonwealth entity established under the Australian Research Council Act 2001 (ARC Act), located within the Australian Government's Education portfolio, and reporting to the Minister for Education.
The ARC is a vital component of Australia's innovation and research system.
It plays an integral role in supporting the research sector to produce excellent and impactful research for Australia's economic, social, environmental and cultural benefit through the delivery of the NCGP.
The NCGP funds excellent pure basic, strategic basic and applied research in all disciplines except medical research.
The ARC's broader remit includes the provision of high-quality research policy advice to the Australian Government, supporting research integrity and promoting ethical research, evaluating the excellence, impact and depth of Australian research and expanding Indigenous Australian knowledge systems.
It also facilitates partnerships between researchers and industry, government, community organisations and the international community.
