Join an outstanding team designing, constructing and operating leading synchrotron X-ray diffraction beamlines.Work with a multi-disciplinary user community, with opportunities to conduct your own research. As part of the Diffraction Group, the Advanced Diffraction & Scattering beamline staff contribute to all projects from design, installation, commissioning and operation of instrumentation and controls systems to software development.Flexible workplace supporting diversity and inclusion.About the OpportunityThe Beamline Scientist — Advanced Diffraction and Scattering (ADS) Beamlines is a new position. This role is the fourth scientist position to join the BRIGHT ADS Beamlines Project and is an opportunity to work within the ADS beamline's science and broader project teams to complete the design, build and commissioning activities. Once the ADS beamlines are operational, the Beamline Science team will apply expertise to the operation, maintenance, and development of the beamlines, as well as undertake research, industry engagement and outreach activities.
The ADS BRIGHT beamlines The unique combination of experiment capabilities offered by the ADS beamlines will provide the Australian and New Zealand synchrotron user communities with high-energy synchrotron X-rays for dedicated diffraction and imaging experiments. Two simultaneously operating ADS beamlines (ADS-1 and ADS-2) will facilitate experiments using X-rays produced by a powerful superconducting multipole wiggler. ADS-1 will permit a range of white and monochromatic X-ray techniques incorporating focusing/collimating optics that will combine with a double-crystal Laue monochromator to provide monochromatic X-rays (50 keV — 150 keV). The main endstation will have sample stages capable of positioning large samples in the beam with masses up to 300 kg. In situ capability will be a powerful feature of the ADS beamlines. There is planned compatibility with environments such as mechanical load cells for engineering and material science applications; anvil-style presses and hydrothermal cells for Earth sciences; variable temperature/pressure for solid-state chemistry, energy production and storage, industrial processing, catalysis and mineralogy experiments.
About YouIn this role, you will foster excellent engagement with other members of the Beamline, the Science Team, and other operational teams across the facility. You will be supported to develop knowledge of the capabilities, techniques and instrumentation to enable the best possible scientific outcomes. You will provide input into scientific development at the Australian Synchrotron through strategic planning and beamline development activities.
