Exciting and challenging opportunity to apply your expertise, professional, and interpersonal skills at one of Australia's landmark scientific research facilities
About the Opportunity
The Nanoprobe Beamline Scientist role is an opportunity to develop innovative experimental synchrotron X-ray microscopy techniques at a world-class scientific facility.
You will work on the Nanoprobe beamline – a 100-meter-long hard X-ray microscope at the ANSTO Australian Synchrotron. The Nanoprobe beamline is currently being built and is due to come online in mid-2026. Once in operation, the Nanoprobe team will join three other teams in the Microscopy Beamline Group — Infrared Microspectroscopy (IRM), Terahertz - Far Infrared (THz), and X-ray Fluorescence Microscopy (XFM).
In this role you will work together with the beamline team and other teams across the synchrotron to deliver and then operate the Nanoprobe beamline. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with scientists, researchers, and industry partners across a wide array of disciplines, providing them with unique opportunities to innovate using cutting-edge scientific technology.
About You
This role is ideal for you if you enjoy engaging with people, being hands-on, continuous learning, and working collaboratively. In this position, we will support you to develop and grow your knowledge of the capabilities, techniques, and instrumentation within the Microscopy Group. Together we will contribute to scientific outcomes to benefit people and the environment. Your insights are important to us and will contribute to developing our teams and the organisation.
To solve great challenges, we need great minds and great teams. At ANSTO, we understand that diverse teams produce better outcomes, and we value the merit that a diverse perspective can bring to our team. We encourage people from diverse backgrounds to apply for our roles including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, primary carers, those with a disability, and women in STEM. ANSTO is a charter member of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) initiative and is proudly taking action to create a gender-inclusive workforce.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Provide scientific and technical support, advice and training to national and international synchrotron beamline users.
Develop expertise and knowledge to assist in the completion of the Nanoprobe beamline and development of plans and processes to move into user operations.
Engage with colleagues and the Australian scientific community to develop a thriving synchrotron research community for the Nanoprobe beamline.
Undertake research which increases own capacity for beamline usage and understanding, and improves scientific visibility of the profile and facilities of the Australian Synchrotron.
Promote and develop outreach activities within the Beamline Group, and on behalf of the Australian Synchrotron and ANSTO, including participating in professional forums and other professional associations in line with your interests.
Ensure appropriate policy, procedures, and guidelines are adhered to associated with the beamline and facility in particular in relation to WHS, radiation safety and equipment.
