THE OPPORTUNITY The Department is seeking talented leaders to join our team at the SES Band 1 level across a range of areas. To be a strong contender for these important and challenging roles you will need to be forward-thinking, self-motivated, resilient, and adept at building relationships in a complex and dynamic environment.
You will also contribute to and communicate the strategic direction of the Department. Your strong leadership credentials and ability to engender trust and respect will be complemented by sound judgement, a strong focus on results, and the ability to solve complex issues.
You will actively promote the ongoing transformation of the Department, and drive and implement reform in a rapidly changing public sector environment.
In addition to this, you will: Determine and be accountable for objectives, priorities, resources, and task allocation. Strengthen organisational capability, including through the management and leadership of people. Provide leadership and commitment to significant internal change programs and work alongside colleagues to build and maintain a whole-of-department strategic capability to provide advice on emerging priority issues. Formulate proposals and advice for Ministers / Secretary on policy and management issues which are the responsibility of the branch. Represent the Department in high-level discussions and negotiations with key stakeholders / outside organisations, and work closely with the Department's Executive. Drive a positive workplace culture by designing and delivering approaches to embed desired behaviours across the organisation. ABOUT THE VACANCIES We have expected and upcoming vacancies at the Assistant Secretary level in the following Branches:
Digital ID Legislation and Rules Branch (Governance and Resource Management Group) The Digital ID Legislation and Rules Branch is responsible for the legislative framework that supports Australia's Digital ID System.
The key focus of the Branch is: Coordinating the implementation and administration of the Digital ID Act 2024, working collaboratively across agencies to align with other legislative reforms to support Digital ID and broader government objectives. Ongoing development of the Digital ID rules and other legislative instruments that comprise the Digital ID legislative framework. Legal policy advice to support the broader implementation of Australia's Digital ID System. Regulation and Resilience Branch (Commercial Group) The Regulatory and Resilience Branch, in the Risk, Claims and Regulatory Reform Division, is responsible for ensuring Australia's regulations continue to support Australia's economic prosperity and wellbeing.
The Branch identifies and explores opportunities for changes to regulatory settings to ensure regulation promotes a dynamic economy and remains fit for purpose in the digital age, while ensuring it can respond to emerging and evolving risks.
Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Branch (Budget Group) The Education and Employment Branch provides policy advice and financial advice to the Government across two portfolios including: Education on early childhood and childcare, early learning, schools, higher education, and financial assistance for students; and Employment and Workplace Relations on skills and training, workplace relations, and employment services.
Industry, Climate and the Environment Branch (Budget Group) The Industry, Climate, and the Environment Branch provides policy and financial advice to the Government across two portfolios including: Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on energy and climate change, environmental protection and conservation, and water policy; and the Industry, Science and Resources on industry development, business capability and competitiveness, resources and scientific and research collaboration.
This selection process will also be used to establish a merit pool that may be used to fill roles as they become available within the following 18-month period.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS Key requirements include: Strong leadership and people management skills, and significant experience in leading teams. Demonstrated capacity for leading and delivering high quality advice in a complex and sensitive environment. Demonstrated capacity for high level stakeholder management and liaison, with strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Capacity to drive innovation and transformation. Relevant tertiary qualifications (desirable). Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS) unless the Agency Head has agreed otherwise, in writing. Successful applicants will be required to undergo the process to obtain and maintain, or continue to hold the required security clearance level for the role as indicated. All Finance staff are required to have a minimum baseline security clearance prior to commencement.
