Job Title: Maritime Operations Team Leader
Salary: EL 1 - $120,290 - $129,379

Who we are:
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As the primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals, which include maintaining the Antarctic Treaty System, protecting the Antarctic environment, understanding Antarctica's role in the global climate system, and undertaking significant scientific work. The AAD also administers the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
The Operations & Logistics Branch delivers a range of maritime and aviation capabilities to the AAP, including our scientific research and supply vessel, the RSV Nuyina. It manages and supports the AAD's station and deep field operations, planning, coordinating, and delivering safe operations to our four research stations and on our voyages.
The Job: Provide leadership, direction, and support to the Maritime Operations Team by fostering a strong culture of safety, inclusion, equity, and flexibility.Manage individual performance, assess behavior and work competency, providing regular and constructive feedback, counseling, and reporting.Lead the planning, management, and execution of AAD voyages to deliver program outcomes as defined in AAD seasonal plans.Lead the planning, management, and operationalization of AAD in-port activities for AAD vessels.Lead and/or coordinate Maritime Logistics input into AAD season planning processes.Lead and/or coordinate Maritime Logistics input into AAD incident management processes.Manage the procurement requirements and processes of the Maritime Operations Team, including approaches to market, in accordance with the Commonwealth Procurement Rules (CPR's) and ongoing contract/contractor management.Manage the Maritime Operations Team's budget and financial processing, including operational and capital expenditure programs, both current and forecast, in line with the Department's strategic directions.Manage the gathering and analyzing of information from diverse sources to develop, review, and update key operational documentation which includes Safety Management Systems (SMS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Risk Assessments, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), business continuity plans, and training manuals.Ensure appropriate physical and electronic records management standards are adhered to by the Maritime Operations Team.Lead the delivery of voyage management recruitment, briefing, and training programs.Implement Government policies on behalf of the AAD with direction from the Director, Maritime Logistics.Skills and Capabilities: Be a thoughtful and courageous leader who experiments and innovates with a proven history of leading through ambiguity and tight time frames.Possess strong people management skills, including the ability to build high performing and multi-disciplinary teams, inclusive of consultants, contractors, technical experts, and staff.Have a proven record of achievement, and a reputation for taking a strategic perspective and delivering results.Demonstrated experience in analyzing and interpreting procedural, regulatory, and legislative documentation to facilitate providing advice to senior management.Proven experience in procurement, financial management, and records management.A demonstrated commitment to modern WH&S and environmental management principles and practices.Knowledge and Experience: Proven experience in leading the planning and execution of shore-side, maritime logistics operations.A proven ability to apply risk management methodologies, as well as compliance and assurance processes in the maritime environment.Demonstrated experience in the interpretation and application of legislation and policies in relation to domestic and international vessel operations.Please note that the successful applicant may be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. They may be required to meet specific medical, adaptability, and personal qualities requirements appropriate to working in those environments.
Mandatory Qualifications:
Relevant qualification/s from an Australian tertiary institution in maritime logistics and/or demonstrated industry and leadership experience.
Eligibility: Citizenship: To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Pre-employment Check: Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process, including a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance, and where required, a pre-employment medical assessment.
