This position is an 'Identified' position which signifies that the role has a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The successful applicant must have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with them.
Who We Are
The Portfolio Strategy Division is the department's central policy area, supporting ministers and the department in addressing complex policy challenges in Australian climate, energy, environment, and water policy. We lead on strategic policy and whole-of-portfolio projects, enhancing the department's policy capability.
The First Nations Branch focuses on engaging across the department to understand policies and programs impacting First Nations people and communities. Our work identifies opportunities to embed and deepen the department's efforts on the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, develop strategies for a consistent approach, and support strong relationships with First Nations people.
The Job
As an Assistant Director within the First Nations Branch, your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Work under limited supervision, manage workloads, and prioritize competing deadlines.
Lead engagement across the department and other agencies to develop and deliver key policies, programs, and engagement priorities, including identifying gaps.
Develop key products such as reports, briefs, ministerial correspondence, and talking points.
Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and maintain working relationships with stakeholders.
Represent the branch in committees and forums regarding policy development and effectively liaise across business areas.
Be strategic, resilient, and innovative, forming sound judgments on complex issues.
Demonstrate strong leadership skills and support the development of staff across the Branch.
Lead a small team and contribute to a respectful, inclusive, high-performing team culture.
Exhibit a high level of cultural acumen and capability, respecting diversity and communicating sensitively with First Nations people.

Sound knowledge of First Nations culture and understanding of their connection to country, customs, and values.
In-depth understanding of First Nations policy, programs, management, and departmental programs.

Desirable Qualifications
Experience working with First Nations communities and/or qualifications in relevant fields.
Eligibility
Citizenship - Must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance - Requires Baseline Vetting security clearance.
Pre-employment Check - Includes a National Police Check, referee checks, and other assessments.
