The Murray-Darling Basin Authority is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray-Darling Basin's water resources in the national interest.

About the First Nations Policy Team
The First Nations Policy team is responsible for developing and guiding First Nations policy within the MDBA.
Its primary focus will be on the 2026 review of the Basin Plan.
A key part of this role is to support engagement with First Nations people and organisations across the Basin.
This role will work closely with other teams in MDBA, as well as, other Commonwealth agencies, the Basin States, and wider stakeholders.

Key Duties
Lead research and analysis on a range of First Nations water management policy issues and provide recommendations on pathways to better recognise First Nations values and objectives in the Basin Plan.
Support the coordination of First Nations input into policy development as part of the Basin Plan Review drawing upon your negotiation and liaison skills with appropriate cultural competency.
Develop strong and constructive working relationships with internal and external partners and agencies and groups, particularly First Nations groups.
Develop policy briefings, position papers and reports on macro and micro policy issues across a range of scales from the global context through to local issues.
Identify risks and challenges to water reform implementation and use your creativity and experience to develop innovative solutions.
Ability to communicate effectively and build and maintain constructive and respectful relationships with First Nations people.
High level research, analysis skills and writing skills, including the ability to articulate complex matters in briefings to a range of internal and external audiences.
Maximise your potential and deliver quality individual and team outcomes.
Uphold the MDBA's respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their heritage, knowledge, and cultural authority in the Murray-Darling Basin.
Essential requirements for this role
Tertiary qualification in natural resource management, economics, or social sciences relevant to the management of water resources.
Desirable requirements for this role
Experience in working with First Nations groups in cultural and natural resource management, environmental and/or social sciences or related discipline.
EL1 non-ongoing, 12-months + possible 6-month extension Located in Canberra, Goondiwindi, Griffith, Mildura or Adelaide.
Please note that this position is an 'Identified' position which requires the candidate to have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and proven culturally appropriate engagement and communication skills.
