This vacancy is advertised as an 'identified position' which means candidates are required to have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and proven culturally appropriate engagement and communication skills. Additional selection criteria are added to cover this and successful applicants will be expected to provide a reference from an Indigenous referee, where possible, to confirm they can meet these requirements. Position Overview Case Officers support their team in providing assistance to the President and Members in the performance of their decision-making and dispute resolution functions under the Act, mainly in relation to mining and exploration proposals that affect native title.
The role involves frequent contact with legal practitioners, heritage officers, tenement managers, mining companies and traditional owners. Candidates must be able to work effectively as part of a national team, while maintaining an ability to work independently and take initiative.
This role would suit someone who is comfortable working in an administrative setting, enjoys communicating with a diverse range of people, and has a good eye for detail.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: Support the Dispute Resolution and Assistance Team in the administration of the NNTT's future act functions; Liaise with external clients and stakeholders about future act applications and related enquiries; Teamwork and independence; Note: Tasks and duties of the role may change from time to time subject to operational needs.

Selection Criteria Possessing and demonstrating an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Possessing and demonstrating an ability to communicate sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Knowledge of native title and the Tribunal and Native Title Registrar's functions, or the ability to quickly acquire this. Proven ability to work under limited supervision, while managing a variety of tasks to achieve results and meet deadlines. Demonstrated oral and interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively with stakeholders across all levels. Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a network of positive working relationships with key people, internally and externally. Demonstrated ability to act impartially and professionally with external clients and operate within the boundaries of organisational processes and in accordance with APS values. Eligibility Australian citizenship – the successful applicant must hold Australian citizenship; Security and character clearance – the successful applicant must satisfy a Police Records Check, and may also be required to complete security clearances during the course of their employment; Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period; Interested candidates who have received a redundancy benefit from an APS agency are welcome to apply but note that they cannot be engaged until their redundancy benefit period has expired.
