Primary objective: To conduct personal and health care decision-making for adults with impaired capacity under the supervision of the Guardianship Management Team, where the Public Guardian has been appointed as guardian of last resort consistent with the requirements and principles of the Guardianship of Adults Act. Context statement: The NT Public Guardian and Trustee is an independent office that exercises Public Guardianship powers and functions, promoting and protecting the rights and interests of adults with impaired decision-making capacity. Key duties and responsibilities: Under the delegation of the Public Guardian and Trustee, undertake less complex decision-making and oversee lower activity caseloads for adults with impaired decision-making capacity. Provide individual advocacy for people under the authority of the Public Guardian and ensure that services are appropriate to the needs of the represented person. Ensure reporting and representation requirements of the Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal are met. Act in accordance with relevant legislation and policies including the Guardianship of Adults Act, the Advanced Personal Planning Act, and the Health Care Decision Making Act. Assist in contributing to the development of policies and procedures relating to guardianship. Follow defined service quality standards, work, health, and safety policies and procedures to ensure high-quality, safe services and workplaces. Selection criteria: Essential: Knowledge of disability, mental illness, and aged care systems in the Northern Territory context. Demonstrated ability to maintain positive relationships with people with impaired decision-making capacity, their families, service providers, advocates, government agencies, and other stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to manage a caseload of less complex clients ensuring all decision-making complies with human rights, ethical considerations, and the relevant legislative frameworks. Demonstrated high-level interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and analyze issues with well-developed negotiation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills. Ability to interpret and apply the Guardianship of Adults Act, related NT and Commonwealth legislation, and policies relating to people accessing the disability or aged care systems. Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures. Ability to participate in the after-hours on-call roster and to travel to rural and remote areas if required.
