About the opportunity The University of Sydney is seeking to appoint the next Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre (CPC), a world-renowned multidisciplinary research initiative dedicated to addressing some of the most pressing health challenges of our time. Established to combat chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions, the CPC unites leading experts from diverse fields, including biology, medicine, social sciences, and engineering. By employing a unique systems-based approach, the CPC fosters innovative collaborations that drive transformative research and deliver real-world solutions aimed at improving global health outcomes. This is a significant leadership opportunity to shape the strategic and operational direction of a centre that is redefining chronic disease prevention and treatment. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Deans, Heads of School, and other senior leaders, providing both academic and operational leadership to advance the CPC's strategic and research goals. You will guide the Centre's mission to generate research that translates into practical solutions, aligning with the University's broader 2032 Strategy, which focuses on research excellence, innovation, and global engagement. Your leadership will be pivotal in fostering multidisciplinary research collaborations and building strong relationships across the University's research community. The CPC's accomplishments are integrated within the University's structure, highlighting the importance of teamwork and shared objectives. Your ability to cultivate partnerships will be essential in enhancing the Centre's influence and impact. About you (skills capabilities and experience) As Academic Director, you will guide the CPC into its next phase, strengthening collaborations with large research teams and external partners to deliver real-world outcomes. You will also have the opportunity to innovate how research success is measured, with a focus on policy impact and community engagement. The Centre's partnerships with local health networks and international institutions, such as UC Davis and the University of Glasgow, provide a strong foundation for continued growth and influence. We are seeking a dynamic leader with a systems-level perspective and a proven track record in multidisciplinary research. You will possess strong influencing skills, capable of uniting diverse teams and building relationships with stakeholders across academia, industry, and government. Experience managing complex research initiatives, securing funding, and working within a large organisation is essential. Your ability to inspire and mentor academic leaders will be crucial to the Centre's continued success. Pre-employment checks Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment. Term and remuneration This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for an initial period of five years, with the possibility of extension beyond this term, subject to performance. A probationary period applies for new appointees to the University of Sydney. At the time of appointment, the incoming director may be able to negotiate a continuing position with the relevant School and Faculty. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
