What you'll be doing The Safeguards Aboriginal Health Worker position, within the Safeguards Team, works as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team to provide primary health care services to Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people primarily including activities in response to the physical, emotional, cultural and environmental needs of people and communities.

Safeguards is a new dedicated child and adolescent mental health service designed to provide care to young people aged 0-17 years who are experiencing acute mental health distress.
The Safeguards team is community-based and will provide rapid, mobile, intensive and flexible short-term support to help during a mental health crisis.

The Safeguards Team will operate 7 days/week with extended hours on weekdays, and will respond to young people in their schools, homes and communities and in hospital-based settings (EDs/Wards), through face to face, phone and telehealth appointments.

Selection Criteria This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position.
Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and be accepted in the community as such.
Exemption is claimed under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area of care in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
It is also highly desirable that the applicant holds or is willing to complete the Certificate IV qualification in Mental Health.
Note, the applicant will be supported by the district to complete the Certificate IV qualification.Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the local Aboriginal community, including an awareness of the issues that impact on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people.Demonstrated experience working with children and/or adolescents with moderate to acute mental health issues and their families, as well as demonstrated understanding of the principles of trauma informed care and its application when working with children/adolescents and families/carers.Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to improve consumer care and outcomes.Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate and consult with others, document care well and interact sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal people and the ability to use computer programs required to plan, deliver or document this care (including capacity to learn relevant programs, including those for patient records and data reporting).Evidence of a current unrestricted driver's license and the ability to maintain.
Ability and willingness to drive/travel as the role requires.
This may involve driving long distances and overnight stays.
