Internship Programs Zoo Miami Internships Overview
Thank you for your interest in a Zoo Miami Internship! These internships are designed to allow participants who desire a career in the zoological field to gain hands-on experience in an AZA accredited zoological setting. Zoo Miami offers various internships in several professions to college students and graduates the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of animal care, animal welfare, animal health, and guest experience.
Additionally, all interns have access to in-person seminars with zoo professionals, providing valuable insights into the foundations of animal husbandry, animal wellbeing, zoological veterinary medicine, enhancing the visitor experience, zoological operations, and career path development.
Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old. All applicants must commit to a minimum of 320 hours over a 16-week period. (Zoo Clinical Interns must commit to a minimum of 600 hours.) Must be currently enrolled in college or a recent college graduate. Internships are unpaid and candidates must be able to afford housing, food, and transportation to Zoo Miami. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and be in good physical condition. Must provide a current negative TB test prior to internship start date (Hospitality Interns are exempt from this requirement). Must submit to background check and fingerprint screening at designated county facility. Participating in an internship does not guarantee employment with Zoo Miami or Miami-Dade County. Qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview within two weeks following the semester's application deadline. If selected from the interview, applicants will be contacted by the Intern Coordinator for further processing.

Animal Care Internship Animal Care Internships at Zoo Miami offer a unique opportunity for aspiring animal care professionals to gain hands-on experience in one of the state's most diverse zoos. Interns work alongside experienced staff and assist with various aspects of animal care, including daily husbandry, habitat maintenance, diet distribution, observing animal training, and monitoring animal health. Interns can anticipate working with seasoned staff to learn industry best practices and observe how to work with animals.
Direct animal contact can be limited and varies with each area.
Internship with Zoo Miami's Animal Health team offers an immersive experience for interns who are interested in pursuing careers in veterinary medicine. The Zoo Hospital Clinical Intern is embedded within the zoo's veterinary team, working in the animal hospital alongside the zoo's veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other staff/students. This internship will focus on learning and gaining experience in all aspects of veterinary medicine in a zoological setting.
Due to the nature of work, the Zoo Hospital Clinical intern is expected to work Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, completing a minimum of 600 hours over the 16-week period.
Zoo Hospital Husbandry and Nutrition Internship The Zoo Hospital Husbandry and Nutrition Internship allows interns to split their time between two crucial operations that impact the health and wellbeing of our animals. This internship focuses on learning all aspects of animal husbandry at the zoo hospital/quarantine and providing nutrition for a diverse animal collection in an accredited zoo. These interns spend half their internship collaborating with the hospital animal care professionals who care for patients in the main hospital, quarantine, and sea turtle hospital. The other half of their internship will be in the zoo's nutrition center, learning about animal nutrition and helping prepare diets for the zoo's animals.
Observational Animal Behavior Research Internship The Observational Animal Behavior Research Internship at Zoo Miami provides aspiring animal behavior and welfare professionals with the opportunity to engage in research projects focused on improving animal welfare. Interns can gain experience in the entire research process, from conducting literature reviews and recommending management initiatives to collecting and analyzing data and presenting results. Interns also participate in various methods of collecting and coding data, work on projects for a wide variety of species throughout the zoo, contribute to the creation of enrichment items, and assist the Registrar department in maintaining animal care records. This program welcomes interns passionate about animal behavior and welfare, regardless of prior experience, and offers valuable insights for both academic and professional growth.
Zoo Miami Foundation Internship Zoo Miami's Hospitality Internship is a one-of-a-kind internship for those interested in pursuing careers in hospitality, tourism, or attraction operations. Interns will develop skills in customer service, problem-solving, and operational management while gaining a deeper understanding of how this impacts the visitor experience and drives business results. During this program, participants receive a comprehensive overview across various guest service areas, including admissions, rides, guest experience, rentals, and operations. The exact day-to-day work interns complete will depend on the role they're assigned, but each role is fun and rewarding in its own way. Successfully completing this program allows Hospitality Interns to build upon their resume and expand their professional network. Additionally, Hospitality Interns are providing a service to the Miami-Dade community as we work to build an eco-conscious community that supports local and global conservation initiatives.
Seeking interns to assist with community engagement and environmental education programs. Potential intern projects include working with students through our school education programs, working with Educators in the Animal Fun Factory (an enrichment makerspace), and assisting the Camp Manager with daily operations of Zoo Camp.
This internship with Zoo Miami Foundation is designed for college students or recent graduates interested in conservation education. All applicants must commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week for the entire length of their internship (4 months total).
Zoo Miami Foundation Special Events Program Interns working with the Special Events Manager will be working under the Marketing department to assist in a variety of fundraising projects and events. Duties may include vendor research, such as getting quotes, production of sponsorship proposal packets, assisting with décor, volunteers, and other organizational aspects of the event. This is an ideal opportunity to gain knowledge and develop skills in special event planning. Must be able to work 15 hours per week. Good organizational skills and attention to detail are a must. Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows, and other related computer programs, are necessary.
