There are 23 Flexible Schools throughout Australia who offer a full-time and multiyear secondary education program for young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling.
Enrolled young people may express a broad range of complex education and social needs and flexible schools respond with a variety of flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices including vocational planning and the development of social connectedness.
The purpose of a Flexible School is to provide young people with a varied and holistic set of learning experiences supporting them to identify and pursue an individual transition to adulthood, employment, further education and training and social connectedness.
ABOUT THE ROLE The Youth Worker reports to the Area Principal or delegate.
The Youth Worker supports and leads: effective learning and teaching programs for young people in both middle and senior phases of secondary education.
physical health and emotional wellbeing of the young people.
development and implementation of the schools strategic and operational plans regarding the function of your role as youth worker.
maintenance of a supportive and inclusive school environment.
relationships with the school, staff, students and their families, industry, and community organisations in relation to planning, actions and achieving outcomes.
young people to engage with relevant external agencies through appropriate referral pathways and stakeholder meetings.

Key Responsibilities include: Have a basic understanding of youth work or related discipline using theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience.
A willingness and ability to develop a substantial knowledge and understanding of Common Ground through Operation by Principles, Collaborative Problem-Solving techniques, and practices.
Accountable for setting priorities for their work area on a day-to-day basis, and completing allocated tasks within timeframes, compliance standards using set procedures and processes.
Work with young people who have experienced complexity in their lives.
Who you will help young people engage in personalized learning plans to access education which meet their individual needs using a range of activities.
There is a clear statement of overall objectives from both a school and organizational level and decisions regarding what tasks and activities are to be undertaken.
Clear communication is provided and support to meet required deadlines.
You will be involved in making decisions concerning some complex issues which will impact your daily work with young people and staff.
You are part of a larger team environment As a youth worker your work will involve many issues where you will help young people, staff or families choose from a variety of services, solutions or pathways.
To support young people, you will be required to research and organise information to help provide a solution.
ABOUT YOU ESSENTIAL: A Working with Children Clearance Notice Current driver's licence (essential) or Light Rigid license (highly desirable) Previous experience in the youth sector with knowledge and understanding of the local First Nations communities HIGHLY DESIRABLE: An understanding of and commitment to principles of social justice Understanding of current youth work practice, trends and issues in service provision to marginalised young people particularly within the alternate education sector Sound level of verbal and written communication skills, including participating in meeting processes, report writing and negotiation skills Skills in computing (especially word processing, Internet) and skills, or the ability to develop skills in database.
