Lead the design of industrial control systems and communication systems and collaborate in the design of electrical protection systems for power stations.
As a Principal Control Systems Engineer, this role will see you enhance your capabilities within WSP's Generation & New Energy team, working to solve exciting challenges and problems, making every day different. You will collaborate with talented professionals and work with clients to explore the viability and feasibility of emerging energy generation alternatives.

Our Energy team works with clients to deliver solutions for technical challenges associated with the clean energy transition. Our expertise spans across renewables and BESS, new age thermal generation, transmission and distribution, to deliver efficient, reliable and resilient outcomes.
What you'll do:
Provide technical expertise in power generation, employing your significant experience in thermal and renewable generation, including your demonstrated experience delivering projects with gas turbines (OCGT and CCGT), coal-fired power stations, and hydro power stations. Undertake and lead design of power station control and instrumentation systems including PLC and DCS based systems, functional safety systems (AS 61511), and EEHA designs. Conduct and lead design of control and protection system communication systems, including DCS data highways, control system networks (Ethernet and serial based) and IEC 61850 protection networks, employing common industrial protocols (e.g. Modbus, DNP3, Ethernet/IP, OPC). Collaborate in the design of power station secondary systems in coordination with electrical engineers, including electrical protection systems and excitation systems. Accountable for electrical engineering analysis and undertakings as well as upholding and promoting compliance with Australian Standards and relevant regulatory acts of legislation and best practice. Coach others in the identification and management of ethical issues associated with the area of work or practice area. As a technical leader proactively maintain effective networks and relevant industry relationships to gain cooperation in meeting business and client outcomes. Seek information to understand client needs and effectively anticipate and meet client needs and encourage client focus on colleagues including coordination with other disciplines. Review and verify engineering drawings and reports. Provide expert technical input to a diverse range of projects in line with WSP quality system and client requirements. Responsibility for client satisfaction and loyalty for the area of expertise. Establish project scope, time, and cost management systems. Coaches others in managing competing demands. Provide technical leads on multiple projects of varying complexity and size. Establish project quality and risk management systems. Establish project communications and integration systems. Mentor junior engineers in technical, project delivery and client relationships. Provide technical review of work performed by the team. Assist team managers and executives in the selection and recruitment of employees. Comply with all role-specific SHEQ obligations. About You:
Bachelor's Degree (Engineering) or Equivalent. Chartered status CPENG and registered (RPEQ, RPEV) Significant experience in thermal and renewable generation Demonstrated delivery of several complex power generation projects Extensive relevant experience with some time spent within a consultancy. Demonstrated competence in providing key technical expertise across a broad range of high-profile projects. Competent in managing risk on substantial projects. High level skills in applying safety in design practices and processes. Demonstrated multiple instances of delivering best client outcomes/options which have saved the client costs/time. Established a recognised profile within industry associations e.g. Active involvement in shaping the industry. Competent in monitoring and managing the scope of multiple projects of varying complexity and size. Prepares and reviews high level and complex technical reports. Experience in business development. Extensive experience in applying QA and OH&S systems. Experience in supervising graduates and managing engineers and senior engineers. Strong experience in client relationships.
