Waste and Environment Compliance Officer Job Type: Permanent position | Full time position
About the Role: In this role, you will oversee and manage compliance, governance, and operational activities related to waste management and environmental practices, ensuring adherence to legislation, safety standards, and Council policies. The role is critical to the delivery of Council's sustainability goals and plays a key part in enhancing operational efficiency, risk management, and community well-being.
Key Responsibilities: Develop and implement compliance policies, procedures, and governance programs for waste and environmental operations. Oversee day-to-day operational activities to ensure effective management of Council assets and compliance with safety practices. Supervise contractors and subcontractors, ensuring compliance with OH&S regulations, risk management protocols, and Council policies. Proactively identify and manage risks associated with waste and environmental operations, ensuring public safety and compliance. Monitor and report on compliance programs and provide solutions to ensure the organisation meets its strategic and operational objectives. Provide expert advice and guidance on compliance issues to both internal and external stakeholders. Prepare and deliver reports, presentations, and updates to senior management and relevant stakeholders. Ensure legislative obligations and Council governance standards are met across all waste and environmental activities. Skills and Experience: Mandatory: Degree or Diploma in Waste Management, Environmental Science, Applied or Biological Sciences, Risk Management, Compliance, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Strong knowledge of waste management principles and environmental legislation. Proven ability to research, interpret, and apply legislation, standards, and policies. Valid National Police Check, Working with Children Check, and Driver's Licence. Desirable: Local Government experience. Experience in contract management. Key Selection Criteria: Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of compliance and governance programs. Proven ability to develop resources, procedures, and manage data related to compliance activities. Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of fostering positive relationships with diverse stakeholders. Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to provide solutions for complex compliance issues.
