Uts | Lead Research Scientist

Details of the offer

Research & Fellowships, Other (Education & Training)
About the UTS Human Technology Institute The University of Technology Sydney has established the Human Technology Institute (HTI) with the aim of being an authoritative voice in Australia and internationally on the leadership of responsible technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), for the public good. The Institute works to maximise public benefit in the design and use of new technologies, and address harm especially to the most vulnerable members of our community caused by poor design, use and regulation of those technologies. The Institute has three interconnected human technology laboratories on AI and new technology: the Skills Lab; the Tools Lab; and the Policy Lab.
What is the Program? The STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Project aims to improve the understanding of the policy interventions that would increase STEM uptake through evidence-based, data-driven programs. Identifying the most effective metrics for measuring STEM uptake will form part of the Project itself, but ultimately uptake will reflect the number of students pursuing STEM study, and the types of STEM offerings they choose to pursue.
Using advances from digital technologies and machine learning, this Project will develop a framework for assessing engagement programs by quantifying the impact of these towards increasing STEM uptake. This will enable CSIRO to deliver programs and experiences based on evidence and data driven insights to understand and enhance school students' engagement with STEM. The Project will develop an understanding of the factors influencing school students' uptake of STEM subjects, create a graphical representation of these factors, and establish a methodology for identifying and ultimately assessing specific interventions. The Project will develop a comprehensive framework for assessing the factors and programs which most effectively influence the uptake of STEM careers based on existing research, expert knowledge, community perceptions and historical data.
We are recruiting for a Lead Research Scientist to lead the research, design and development of new probabilistic Machine Learning (ML) methods in causal inference for this program.
About you The Lead Research Scientist will have an established reputation and credibility with evidence of effective science leadership, facilitating positive team environments. You will have a proven track record of publications as the first author and delivering research outcomes funded by large research grants. As part of this role, you will collaborate and engage with industry, enabling you to deliver projects. You will also have a PhD in a relevant field such as statistics, probabilistic ML or its transfer to industry/community. It is essential that you have a deep understanding of Bayesian methods and their applications.
Remuneration Base Salary Range: $178,123 to $195,263 pa (Level D) This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.
This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 12 months. UTS staff also benefit from a wide range of Employee Benefits including flexible work practices, childcare centres, generous parental leave and salary packaging opportunities.
